DOSBox in HX Extender does indeed work.
I haven't tested the "new" version with HDA & AC97 support though.
But this gets ridiculous. You need at least a Pentium 4 to get enough performance out of HX + DOSBox to play any games. At that point there is no advantage whatsoever in using it other than that it's fun to try things.

On a P4 you'll get around 30fps in 320x200 in Quake using DOSBox with HX. Low teens at 800x600. DOS games come in all kinds from the 80's+.
On my 486DX4/100 in 96 I was probably playing below 20fps below 640x. Hard to remember that far back.
DOSBox in DOS only really be useful for compatibility reasons when the game couldn't run on the hardware.

The big appeal to me would be - FreeDos + HX Extender + DosBox is all freeware. I can re-tool DosBox Distro around that combination. Even the weakest modern atom/celerons offer P4 level single core performance.

I don't remember, as it's been many years since I've tried to do this.
I do remember I was able to get various other Windows programs working with HX. It was fun to play with.
Maybe I'll pull it up again soon and try some things.
