There are many other V2 cards with the same layout as the InnoVision Mighty 3DII V3, component values from this card can be safely used.

I hope making a few reserved posts isn't against the rules, I plan to add more info at a later date.

literally just bought a defective Voodoo2 with some components knocked off, this helps a lot.

edit: it's a Diamond Monster 3D II, the layout is slightly different, but component numbers seem to be the same at first glance.

Hah, I bought the same model the other day and it came with C128 knocked off, too 😉
With the cap missing, the card wouldn't get recognized at all. So I went ahead and desoldered a completely random cap from an old mainboard, soldered it in place and voilà - card gets detected and drivers install fine. However, as soon as I launch any 3dfx demo, the screen goes black and the demo executable locks up. Not the most professional approach, but since my digital multimeter doesn't support capacity measurement and I couldn't find the value for the cap anywhere, I didn't have too many options.
So now I'll go and get a 100nF cap because that seems to be what I need.

No problem! But before replacing the cap I'd recommend checking the card for other damage, I don't see how a missing C128 would cause this behavior. C128 is used for TMU0 RAM VCC decoupling, the card should be detected without it.

I double- and triple-checked the whole board and apart from a few bent legs on the FBI chip there is no visible damage other than the missing C128. I carefully straightened them with a Stanley knife before trying the card for the first time.
Do you happen to have any hints in which direction I should investigate or which tests to carry out?

Besides missing/broken SMDs and bent FBI/TMU pins, another thing that should be checked on any faulty V2 card is loose FBI/TMU pins. Try gently poking each pin and see if any of them moves.

The debug utility may provide some useful info.

Hi!
On what basis did you determine capacitors capacities 1206 C3, C4, C17, C35, C37, C43, C45 on the 5V line?
I measured the capacities and received divergent results
C3 = 3147nF
C4 = 3147nF
C17 = 3200nF
C35 = 3146nF
C37 = 3117nF
C43 = 3166nF
C45 = 3147nF

I suspect that a new capacitor with a capacity of 3.3uF than 4.7uF would be more suitable here, although I know that it does not matter much for the work of V2. I used 2.2uF capacitors and the card works stably. The other capacities you provide in the table are the same. Voodoo2 cards are very tolerant of lack of capacitors, they work properly even without them.

Hi,

I used an LCR bridge. In my case, the measured values were closer to 4.7uF than 3.3uF. Some variation is normal, some manufacturers modified the reference design a bit (the card shown in the first post has polarity markings for the 1206 caps and uses ceramic caps, some manufacturers used tantalum caps there), or just used what was cheaper in that production run and was in the right ballpark.
Either way, the value of these bulk decoupling caps isn't critical at all (in fact a modern 1uF X7R may be better than the original 3.3-4.7uF caps ).

I just got a banged up Creative CT6670 Voodoo 2 on eBay. I had to straighten quite a few legs on all three chips, but all appear to be good now. There is also some trace damage it seems near the VGA connector. I fixed some of the solder damage there. From what I can see, only one surface mount capacitor is missing (C9) as pictured. It is located at the back of the card behind the SLI connector. It doesn't seem to be present on the reference design in the OP's diagrams. Any ideas what this is for or if it could be contributing to my problems? Any idea what this should be or if there is there a 'safe' capacitance value I could try here just for troubleshooting purposes?

The card is detected fine in Windows 95, drivers install properly etc. I get no video output at all (passthrough or otherwise). The system locks up when trying to go to the voodoo tab in display properties.

Awesome! Thanks so much sdz. Good catch on C48, I totally missed that one. Now that I'm looking more closely, I see a few more:

1. C128 is missing from the top left on the back of the card. I see that one in your component map (100nf 25V). My card is only 8MB so thinking C128 may not serve any purpose.
2. C81 is missing. Also in the component map (1nf 25v)
3. C108 is missing. I don't see this one in the component map. Any ideas for this one?
