Hi all,

Have this board on the way: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254594779337. It has the Slot 1 retention built in to the motherboard, which is nice.. however the CPU I am looking at which is this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/401872971806 has a large aluminium heatsink that to me looks like it overhangs where the retention "arms" go ?

Is this an issue or will this somehow work ?

the retention arms usually go onto the plastic shell of the CPU, as this CPU has no plastic shell (only back cover), the heatsink is there instead, you can see the two little retention nubs poke out at the side beyond the heatsink.

in short: yes it will fit 😀

is used on many different motherboards. You are buying a Chaintech 6BTM0-M100a, if you ever want to run Coppermine core CPUs, you'll need to check this:

I have a high quality gelid low noise 40mm fan here and some self tap screws for "digging into" the spaces in heatsink fins would this work ?

I have a limited selection of CPUs on ebay UK to choose from.

What would be some best case options besides the one I linked ? I have seen this as a cheaper option ? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/223987859053

I do not know if this board has the chip to make Coppermine work so assume it does not.

EDIT: the CPU you chose initially is not a Coppermine so for now you're fine. Sorry if I got you confused.

Unless you want an exercise in frustration, would not go for that. It is 66MHz FSB and has little cache. They are indeed the very budget Slot1 option. I don't like them.

It is a pity there's no pic of the backside of that first one so we can see what mounting options we have.

It does not fit 'out of the box'. I have a couple of these heatsinks and they come with a different type of retention clip - see photo. But it is easy to file two cutouts in the sides of the type of clip on that motherboard to make them fit.

So what CPU's would indeed work with the retention and also be compatible with this board ?

Better yet if someone could take a few moments and point to specific examples on eBay UK (and located in the UK) for me ?

The best way to go imo is to wait until you have the board. Vogons member 'Evasive' posted a link that shows how to figure out what type of VRM chip is installed. If you are lucky and have a chip that is VRM 8.4 compliant you can go all the way up to 1Ghz cpu's and then there are plenty people here who can help you make the best choice.

interesting, do you have a more detailed picture of that? to me the heatsink looks like it's exactly the same width as a PII package with the nubs on the side:

The image of the one on ebay is not the best. From memory, there were at least two retention mechanisms. here is another one with a simmilar heat sink:

The ears on the heatsink should go into the holes on the retention mechanism. This I think is a OEM design, or a cost reduced design. The retention mechanism bends out the way to allow the heatsink to clip in. Originally the PII CPU (as IMI posted) had nubs/clips on the CPU package that bent out the way of the retention mechanism. Hope this makes sense.

The nubs on the side are not the problem, nor is the width. These (server) heatsinks have a projection that is bent towards the back on both sides which prevents them from falling in the clips on common end user boards. You can either saw off the projection or file a cutout in the sides of the common clips. Clear ?

PS. The brand and type of these sinks is Foxconn 135638-003 C

@Xs1nX, no the cpu you linked wont fit without some minor modification to either it or the retention mechanism (RM) on the board. The problem as described by @PARKE is that the cpu heatsink has 'extra' lugs which want to fit into a matching cut-out on the RM, but which isn't present on the board you linked (the red areas in this pic)

so you can either add the cut-outs to the RM (plastic) or you can remove the lugs from the heatsink (metal). Another option is to replace the RM entirely with one that has the cut-outs already.

So I could just cut the "slots" in the plastic ?, Its unlikely I will find a separate retention setup..

Would be helpful if someone could have a glance on eBay UK and point me to some CPUs that would work out of the box in all ways so to speak as its hard to tell but I think the one I linked is the best available ?

I still believe it could fit, the plastic part on the OP board is wider on top than the one with the fixed retention mechanism.

I'd like to see a more detailed picture of that... as it almost looks "closed off" on top compared to others, almost as if the plastic is meant to go "over" the cpu.

if you look for images on google you find plenty of pictures that don't have the slots visible but there is space there inside the plastic part, see how it offsets outwards on top, same in the one in the OP.

or look at the free space beween the CPU back and retention mechanism here, I don't see the metal on the heatsink protuding further than that.

it looks like it is meant to slot in there, see also the ears on top of the retention mechanism pointing inwards.
