Hi all, I have been a huge tomb raider fan for years (since the very first) and I JUST discovered this whole texture thing. I've known about it for a while, but I didn't know anything about making my own.

I have immensly enjoyed the hi res textures made by others, and I was hoping for a hi res Cistern as that is one of my favorite levels.
I wish I had time to do it on my own.

Anyway, I figured I'd give it a shot, and here is a screen capture for you guys to enjoy.
I redid the door with the lion head and the floor/gravel texture. It looks a little out of place with the low res textures right next to it, but I was so proud of it, that I wanted to show you all anyway!
Enjoy, and let me know what you think!
Thanks!

Looking really good. I should warn you that Antonijadis has already done a beautiful job of the Cistern. The Egypt levels are as yet untouched though.

I wasn't aware of that, but thanks for pointing that out.
I'll search for it to see if I can find his texture pack.

Maybe when I get home, I'll give the egypt levels a shot.
I think they have less "atmoshphere" than the cistern and other indoor levels, but It's worth looking at.

Thanks for the compliment!

What about Atlantis? I have so many beautiful textures for Atlantis from American McGee's Wonderland and VTMB and TRL.

how did you do the textures, did you start from scratch with photoshop? , or import a pic or something? I havent looked into trying to make one yet. Is there a simple tutorial? I didnt get how to use paint and make one 256x256

I used photoshop.
I imported the 64x64 texture, enlarged it to 256x256,
and then used that as the tempate for the new texture I wanted to create.
I tried to mimic the size and colors of the original as best as possible.
I was more successful with the wall texture than the floor of the cistern, as the old floor was more brown and mine is more blue.
I also feel my floor is too gravelly as opposed to mossy/moldy.

I'm enjoying this immensely, but I don't think I'd ever have the time to texture up an entire level. My hats off to those of you that do.

Here is a texture I made for the sand and a rock face in the first egypt level.
It sort of works, I think:

Looking really nice! A lot of time goes into it. Ik have tried myself and abandonded pretty fast. I think I would need several years to finish one level...

The detail level is pretty neat too! Ik especially like texutres that really look like the original game, as not to alter the particular atmosphere in it. So, llike you said, that gravel needs just a little bit of moss here and there.

Isn't that Glidos logo bothering you? I bought it pretty quickly just to get rid of it! And it's really worht it! The price is even too low for the quality of the product!

The textures look really good. What i dont get is, are you starting from scratch, and you just know how to paint these on the computer. Or do you import textures from another game and edit them? Or can you somehow enhance the original ones for a starting point or what? im lost as how you go about it all? Also, how do you save it 24 bit or whatever when done editing in photoshop?

Thanks for the compliment.
I am going to help you out a little bit here.

Let's think for a second: What are the ways to get a realistic image of a boulder in photoshop?
1) we can draw one from scratch
2) we can go out and take a digital photo of a boulder
3) we can put a boulder on a scanner and scan it in
4) we can find an image of a boulder on the web.

Any of these methods will work, although some are easier than others. 😁

What I do is I start with a photograph of the texture I want, cut out a 256x256 piece of it, and then carefully paint it, dodge, burn, saturate, desaturate, add noise, blur, sharpen, etc. until my photo texture closely matches the original texture.
when you save it as a bitmap, Photoshop will ask you if you want to save it as a 24bit bitmap.
That's all there is to it. I hope this helps you!

Here is an example of my cistern texture to help you:

A picture is worth 1000 words, eh? 😁

Good start! A very important point to note though: your colours on the new cistern walls do not look convincing because you have only painted a flat colour over the top without blending it with the texture. As you're using Photoshop, you have a huge amount of tools open to you -- start experimenting with different brush/layer modes to blend your colours, you'll find you get much more professional results.

Also, I noticed that you haven't seamlessly tiled your textures. Do you know how to do this? Get used to using the Filter -> Offset tool. Search google for "seamless tiled texture tutorial" if you're not sure what I mean -- it will help your texture tiling a huge amount.

Actually, I found a couple for you:

http://www.cadtutor.net/dd/photo/seamless/seamless.html
http://www.biorust.com/tutorials/detail/18/en/
http://www.pixelperfectdigital.com/photograph … amless-Textures

Finally, you really should pay for Glidos or you will surely through something large and heavy through your monitor if you stare at that spinning logo too long. I know I would!

Keep up the good work -- if you get a point where you have texture a complete level, we can host your texture pack on the new TRX website coming soon.

Yeah, it's bothersome. Just didn't get around to purchasing it yet.

Gambit, excellent points.
I use all kinds of brush/blending modes with varying opacities. I guess I can get my brown to look less “brushed on” if I just work at it a bit more. Thanks for the critique.

I actually do know about seamless textures as well. I did it with my cistern floor texture and the Egypt sand texture as well, even though the sand could be a bit better.

When doing the cistern wall or the Egyptian rock, I ignored it in favor of trying to mimic the original texture.
But all your points are good and thanks for finding the tutorials for me.
I don’t know how far I’m going to get, as I’m doing it for my own curiosity and not investing a whole lotta time in it.

I’m actually just trying to completely texture one area (i.e. the beginning of the City of Khamoon level) just to see what an environment looks like which was completely textured by lil’ ol’ me. But even that is very time consuming.

That wall looks awesome!

I only have one question: When the textures will be tiled in the game, how will it look like? Does it stands well? It would be a shame for such beautiful work if the tiling doesn't match well...

If you do the right work on making your textures tile well, it looks fine. Do it wrong and it looks silly.

It's all in the details.

I have noticed original textures that don't seamlessy tile that work well for certain parts of the game. For Example, there are bridges that use the top part of a texture for the sides of the bridge that look good with the original stone texture, but would look sort of ho-hum with a seamless stone texture.

I will try to capture a screenshot that shows this.
