I am new to Dosbox and Linux. I started a mandrake 10.0 system a couple of days ago and got Dosbox working on it with Make. A friend recommended that I try Ubuntu, so I loaded it and liked it. I wanted to get Dosbox again so I went to system>administration>synaptic package manager, searched for and found Dosbox and apparently successfully installed it on my system. It didn't show up in my applications menu, but I found the executable in /usr/bin. I ran it and nothing happened. I ran it in a terminal, and nothing happened. I closed the terminal, opened another one and entered $ dosbox --version and got the reply 0.63. I rebooted and tried again with the same results. I read the FAQs and readme files and found nothing. I searched the web and found nothing. I reinstalled Dosbox. Anyone know what might be going on? On a side note, in the system monitor it shows Dosbox running as "uninterruptable" and I can't end the process. In fact, it shows a Dosbox entry for every time I enter Dosbox in the terminal. Right now there are 6 of them in there.

I can't help you with the Ubuntu problem, but the current release of DOSBox is now 0.65. I think you have a better chance of getting help if people know that you are running the latest and greatest.

Installing a pre-compiled package is easy, but you often end up with an older version. If you can't find a ready-made 0.65, and since you managed to compile and install DOSBox on your previous Debian system, I suggest you bite the bullet and do it again. If the problem persist, having your own build/compile/install system will also allow you to get extra information out of the system when it crashes.

There is another recent thread here where DOSBox causes a kernel-crash on a Linux system. You might want to search for it, and see if the problem description and the answers applies to you.

Edit: I did the search for you - DOSBOX 0.65 does not start under linux

The DosBox 0.63 package available for Ubuntu works fine with breezy badger and Dapper Drake. Compiled CVS works fine as well....well at least 3 weeks ago it did, I haven't tried since.
