Been playing around with Debian and Duvian Jessie on a K6-2 266 set up with 3 sticks of 128megs of ram. Both run just fine on it. The most suitable web browser for my system is NetSurf. It is light and quick. It doesn't error out on loading the same web pages like Epipany does. Not perfect ny any means but does work. Modern encryption on a P1 class rig must be a plus. Works on a P200mmx set up with 256megs of ram as well, Using xfce4 as the desktop environment with Window Maker and OpenBox as backup.. MATE and LXDE run fine as well.

GNOME 2 is what MATE started with. As a codebase, they were the same at the beginning but are no longer the same. As a project, of course, MATE is not in any way GNOME.

Go have a look at the credits on an installation then...

https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-desktop/ … ate-desktop.pot

What are you getting at? They credit GNOME for their work up to 2011.

Nobody denied that it was forked from GNOME, that is very different from being GNOME itself or even being GNOME based.

Well it's definitely based on GNOME2. And most people would be hard pressed to tell them apart.

MATE has plenty of changes under the hood.

Of course there is. The same would apply if it was supported bt Gnome over the last 9 years,,,,

Except it wasn't. Gnome built Gnome Shell instead.

Again, Gnome 2 is something that ended development 9 years ago. I don't think there's even any developer overlap.

Does it matter, shared developer does not even imply shared code.

Yes. FACTs matter.

Well, the FACT is that the Gnome project hasn't had a 2.x release in over nine years. Mate has introduced significant changes to the original fork including the adoption of GSettings in place of GConf, tossing CORBA, adopting GTK3, etc. Another FACT is that Mate has no right to any of the property or branding of Gnome and the software under it's umbrella. Once last FACT is that the Gnome Foundation and Gnome project have no official relationship or influence over the technical direction or organization of Mate.

Mate and Gnome 3 are like the chimpanzee and gorilla with Gnome 2 being the common ancestor.

Yes. FACTs matter.

The earth revolves around the sun. That is a fact and just as relevant as MATE having developers who worked on GNOME 2.

...NewDeal Office 3.2a...

How did you set up the networking on your setup?

As pertains to those particular screen grabs, dial-up PPP, using an actual modem.

Here's another NewDeal Office 3.2a setup though, running on a 286/10MHz system equipped with just 1MB of RAM and standard VGA, but with parallel-port, Ethernet-to-WiFi connectivity.

Web browsing and e-mail and IRC on a 286, oh my!

Granted, the Skipper browser is nigh unusable with today's web, and POP3/SMTP access into a Gmail account requires a Stunnel proxy or similar, but still. 😀

Certainly a good effort Cloudschatze. Seems like you can use ethernet with NDO2000 and BeadBox Ensemble using a Dos packet driver. You don't use the Gui setup program but edit the geos.ini file and copy a particular file to a particular directory, restart geos and you are away laughing.

Haven't done yet but will give it a shot. I'm running packet driver, winpkt then run Windows 3.1 with Trumpet Winsock 1.0 loading on Windows 3.1start up. Works damn well, Use the PITCH16 irc client on it. My 286 has 8megs of ram.

I have original NDO 3.2a disks but one is bad. Can still install it though by not installing certain items.

How would you guys classify this thing?

It's retro (it's 15 years old) but x64-only, it's an OS but it can't really run anything useful, it's made by one single guy and it's awesome, in a strange and weird way...

Kind of a bittersweet story. Terry Davis was the author of TempleOS. I'm happy the project gave some direction to his life and he certainly had good skills as a programmer, but what ultimately happened to him was a tragic example of the terrible cost payed by those who suffer from mental illness.

I find any lxde version of linux "usable" on most computer from the 1.x Ghz Athlon/P3. I lately tried a P4 Northwood 3,2Ghz and still runs "fast" and with a SSD would be a good home computer for easy mail, web, office and with all the updates. Nowdays the 32bit versions seems to be at their end or it's my feeling but still getting updates even if I don't find newer kernel tree versions anymore but before or later it was expected.
Still there're the Prescott x64 or the Athlon64 that'd support everything I suppose.
But if we go back to the Pentium2 or K6-2 modern modern linux are too much and there're not many choices I know beside their own old operating systems.

For Pentium and Pentium II class CPUs PuppyLinux 4.1.2 Retro is a very feature complete option.

It's a great piece of software(history).
The only bad thing is that he lacked the manpower and time to port some killer-apps(Doom, Quake, etc) to it. I read that he used to work at SciTech in the 90ies, so anytime I look through the tools directy on the old machines, containing SciTechDD, Terry comes to mind.
