the thing is though, it's always the worst time to buy new hardware ^^

I picked up an HP z420 workstation for cheap. They are almost giving these away today on eBay.
This one has a 6-core Xeon CPU and 64gb ram.
I am going to upgrade the CPU to an 8-core Xeon and load this up with drives.
I have a drive cage that I am going to put directly under the existing drive cage so I can have a total of
9 hard drives, remove the DVD drive and add a PCI Nvme SSD boot drive and a couple SATA SSD’s too.

So I am going to have this thing loaded with drives.
Then I am going to copy all my NAS stuff onto these drive and get rid of my single disk WD MyCloud NAS drives because they really Suck
And I dont want to loose my Data to a drive failure.

So this is an inexpensive way to build nice home workstation with lots of drives for storage of all your stuff.

I had a z800 and z400 before and I really liked them.
I actually wanted a z820 but they are still too expensive and I like the smaller case of the z420 also.

Anyone interested in building a good workstation for cheap this is the computer you want.
They are selling for cheap right now on eBay.
1) Support Xeon .v1 up to 8-cores that I know of but I think even more cores.
2) supports up to 64gb ram maybe more.
3) supports up to 10 sata drives ( 8-3.0gb and 2-6.0 gb )
4) supports AHCI SSD’s.
5) this cheap drive cage that I bought for $25 on eBay fits perfect under existing and it holds 5 drives.
6) has built in raid controller ( raid levels 0-4 ) with 4 drives.
7) you can add a SCSI controller.
😎 you can add Nvme drives ?
9) supports most modern graphics cards
10) it not to big and its quiet.
11) it can be built for cheap.
12 ) support 3 ( 5.25 ) drives in front bay.
13) 600 watt PSU
14) you can add a PCI AHCI SSD or Nvme drive.
15) you can add an HP SSD or AHCI ssd.

I am using a Z420 workstation at work. It will be taken from me and replaced with an upgrade, but I will miss it A LOT..

Yeah, My i5 quad core Intel HP 6300 desktop PC is starting to get slow and I need more disk space. So this is my upgrade.
8-core Xeon should work okay for now but later I can upgrade it to a 12-core or more.
I had dual 6-core Xeon HP and Mac Pro work stations before but they were to BIG and and Loud and lacked the slots and connectors I needed so this will work fine for now.

Its allot less expensive than going out and trying to build a xeon computer similar to this from scratch.

This base model only cost me $130 with 6-core xeon and 32gb of ram. And it looks hardly used.

You mean you actually need a desktop for things your ipad can't do? Blasphemy.

I don’t use a desktop much. This is basically going to be my home NAS theater media server.
Thats why I wanted allot of disk space.

8-cores and 16-threads for less than $200
$130 for the HP z420 computer
$50 for a 8-core ( 16-threads ) Xeon E5-2690

This thing is a BEAST and just plows thru anything.

Just built a YC96 today for using at work. Me and 3 other co-workers in my office just built some mechanical keyboards. Here's mine:

Gateron Brown Switches
PBT dye-sub Pepsi Keycaps

That's really cool looking. Where did you get the Pepsi key caps?

AliExpress. They have Pepsi and Coca-Cola. Quality is pretty good for the price. They aren't GMK or Signature Plastics quality, but there are very few flaws and they feel great.

Nice. I've gotten some pretty decent stuff from them in the past.

I almost threw up just looking at it. I don’t drink sugar water but that shade of blue ( royal blue ) is just sick looking on a keyboard.
I think I had some Kenny shoes back when I was a kid in that color. Adidas Blue Swede sneakers I think.

At the risk of some punk telling me to get to back to the 1950s with my DDR3 slots, this isn't old enough for the vintage hardware thread. x2 Viking Technology 100GB SATADIMMs, first released in 2010. Picked them up for the novelty more than anything else... also as consolation for not winning the auction of a Gigabyte Ramdisk.

Yea, the prices of those Iram drives are almost more than what they cost new...

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

I wasn't aware there was such interest in it (I was just looking for something to do with all the RAM I have lying around). Especially since I was the sole bid for days. That is, until multiple bidders piled in at the last minute. The standard fare.

not really modern... not really retro either though... so here it goes.

The attachment hardware39_25.jpg is no longer available

but why?

why would I get this half broken beat up generic laptop?

well... it was cheaper than trying my luck with some shady chinese chip-seller on ebay 😁
I hope nobody will have hard feelings with me parting this one out ^^

I think it's generic enough that no one will shed a tear .
