Similar case here, with an 865 chipset. Installed Windows 98SE with a Radeon X850 Pro in an ASRock 775i65G motherboard with a Pentium 4 520 (2.8 GHz, Prescott core) and 1 GB of RAM. Works perfectly, although Duke Nukem 3D does not work properly (lots of screen tearing and flickering). Oddly enough, Need for Speed SE works perfectly out of the box, even with DirectX 9. I can also confirm that Catalyst 6.2 is the correct driver to use. Most D3D and OpenGL games work great.

About Duke3D, try launching it after rebooting to DOS, not while running Windows. I had similar display corruption on my Ati 9800pro, but restarting in DOS mode fixed it.

The issue can be caused by 3dfx glide drivers. Grab Glide2x for ATi Radeons http://www.3dfx.cz/download/glides_radeon.zip boot Windows 98/me into safe mode, open the archive and extract the files to your C:\Windows\system folder overwriting the existing files. Reboot you should be good to go. I had this issue with my windows 98SE retro pc with 9800 Pro and vodoo 2 sli. Replacing glide drivers fixed the issue for me.

I had another issue with Radeon X850XT 8x AGP. I wasn't able to install drivers on the Win98SE. For Radeon X800GTO no issues on the same system. I don't try any glide drivers as prefer to use hardware.

What brand card do you have?

Ill try less memory, have 2GB, but limited to 512 with himemx, will go get a 256MB stick tomorrow.

Was thinking that maybe its a bios think, that Palit did something. So if no one comes up with a better solution will just try to put a reference x850xt bios on it, see if that helps.

So tried 256MB ram, nop.

Flashed all x850 agp bioses that I found, no one worked for this gpu. Lucky I know Im a dumbass and just in case took a pci vga card with me, so I could reviwe this shitty card.

Then tried cat 5.9, 5.2 and manually installing drivers.

Nothing works. Shitty win98 os, forgot in 20y how shitty it is 😀

I run an X800Pro X850Pro on an LGA775 (P4M890 - VIA is the best choice for this) motherboard Windows 98SE system with no problems, what exactly is your issue?

I think what your running into is that Cat 6.2 was meant for x800 series or x850 series using the native AGP gpu, but the x850 XT AGP card is using the PCIe to AGP bridge chip, R420 is native AGP aka x800XT, but R480 is PCIe native, and with the bridge chip is called R481. That may be your issue, ATI cards have always been finicky with that bridge chip and drivers.

x850 is native agp. One x800 variant was what you are thinking about.

In all honesty.. I wanted to build a Win98 machine, but the games I would like to play the most are around 2000 era, so if no one goes "Thats your problem!", Im content with just using XP... I do have both Os-es installed, maybe boot into Win98 from time to time, just to spit at the monitor 😁

This Card is a native PCIe R480.
For Win98 you should stay with AGP.

Win10 Ryzen 7 5800X | TUF B450M-Pro | 32GB DDR4-3800 CL16 | RX 6800 XT
WinXP Core i3-3220 | H77 Pro4-M | 8GB DDR3-1600 CL9 | X1950 Pro
Win98SE Pentium E5800 | 775i65G R3.0 | 512MB DDR1-400 CL2 | X850 XT

I found a solution!

It bothered me, cus it clearly works for some users. So I used RaBiT bios editor, to edit the original bios, just changed the name(ups the T at XT got trimmed) and device IDs, copied all 4 values from a reference x850 xt rom.

Rebooted, it reinstalled the drivers and there we go...

Tried one game quickly to confirm 3d works and it does.

Problem solved!

I have a nice X850XT AGP from today, NO WAY to install driver on Windows 98Se...how can we solve that?

It is from Xpertview (Palit).

I am going mad.

First step would be to be a bit more detailed about the problem you are having.

the exact same problems described in this thread, this is why I am writting just here.

I have bought a X850XT from XpertView (Palit I think) and I have a socket A Athlon Xp-M system with a dual-boot.
In Windows XP it is working just fine and immediately, in Windows 98SE doesn't work, I cannot simply install driver.
I tried the 6.2 ME drivers, and after the system found a standard VGA card, I reboot and installed drivers.
Then after rebooting a message says me that Control Panel cannot start cause it cannot find a regular adapter or drivers isn't installed.

I tried a lot of times and it happens everytime.

I am asking how the other users can install the card on Windows 98SE without problems;

My card is perfectly working in Windows XP, so it is not the problem.

Install the driver, reboot. Go to device manager, disable the Standard VGA dev'ce, do another reboot and it will work fine.

Nope.

I installed the drivers, then reboot, then error about Control Panel, I went in device manager and I found no VGA standard to disable, only the two X850 series with the ! on the icons.

Something about that 6.2 ME drivers don't really work.

I put images to explain, it's THE SAME situation that a user found before, just scroll up this thread.
