I've got the floppy versions of Clouds and Darkside of Xeen lying around, and surprisingly, even after all these years the disks have not developed any errors. I think. However, when I try to install under Dosbox, I can't get past the first disk of either game. That is, I mount the floppy at A:, run install, and let the installer copy files from Disk 1. Then it asks me for Disk 2, which I supply, but it only reads it for a second before asking for Disk 3, etc. It asks for the last disk several times before claiming that there were errors copying INSTALL.EXE.

I don't think the floppies have errors. The reason for this is that, in order to prevent my only copy of these games from further deteriorating, I've made disk images of each floppy and checked each filesystem for errors, finding none. Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong?

I don't know if anyone cared yet, it's been so little time, but I did find a workaround. All the files on the floppies are archived with the ARJ format, which is implemented in open source on Sourceforge. You can get the archiver and extract the game yourself, without submitting to the inanities of a fourteen-year-old installer.

The floppy version is, of course, far better than the CD version since you don't have to change CD's or make compromises about sound. The sound, by the way, works perfectly for me.
