Poll: DosFreak vs Machine vs Real Name for nick?

I've used my DosFreak nick for quite awhile. I've been using it since 1998 on the internet. Can't really remember what I used before that but I do remember using "Batman" on some BBS's back in 1990. (Hey, I was 10 cut me some slack!).

Anyways I was thinking about changing my nick just for the heck of it......

When I was stationed overseas in the UK I had to perform auggie duty because the Threatcon level had increased for some reason I cannot remember and since the base was so small they had to pull people out of their workcenter to perform SP duties. So I would stand at the gate at the entrance to the base for hours on end and open and close the gate (manually). I'd drive around the base in the cop copy (base was really small so not much point to that. Then just for fun we'd perform building checks and some training exercises. All in all pretty cool but extremlly boring to a computer tech. 😉

Anyways since I was an SP for awhile I had to have a nickname. It just so happened that 8mm came out around that time and everyone was talking about "Machine". Well since I worked on computers, wore glasses, and was a pretty quite fellow, the name stuck. So my nick was "Machine". I cannot remember if I came up with it or if it was someone else.

So I'm thinking about using "Machine".

The only problem with the "Machine" nick is that it's not as friendly as "DosFreak".....if you consider that a problem.

The other possibility is using my real name which is helpfull since it seems more professional but typing my name which is 14 characters long is a PITA.

Machine is silly. Doesn't say a think. You can come up with something better.

I like DosFreak. But if you decide to change your nick, don't pick up that 'machine' one. Think of something else.

Yeah, Machine doesn't really have any personality behind it....which is kind of boring.

Reason I picked DosFreak so long ago is because I've used DOS for so long. Can't really remember the first time I started playing with DOS but I do know that the first PC my parent's ever bought (286-12mhz) in 1990 came with MS-DOS 4. That's when I really started to do more with computers than just run games on them since before I would only ever use computers at friends houses or at school.

So I guess you could say I've used DOS heavily from 1990-1999. (9 years) From 2000-2006 (7 years) I've only used DOS in NTVDM/VPC/Vmware. I'm not sure that using DOS in Vm's count as being a "Freak" anymore, especially since I'm gradually forgetting alot of DOS stuff. heh. In 20 years there probably really won't be much meaning left in the name....

Another good thing about the "DosFreak" name is that when I'm helping people online and they see the nick then they can make the assumption that I know what I'm talking about since I named myself "DosFreak", whereas with "Machine" they'd get turned off by the name and the nick doesn't really say anything.

Additionally if they assume that I know "DOS" then I'll probably know everything else as well since DOS is pretty much the OS that defined the x86 PC and if I know that then I probably know everything else PC related.

Uh oh.....if I don't think of another nick fast I'm gonna end up keeping DosFreak. 😀

I voted for retaining the DosFreak nickname. It seem appropriate for a forum like Vogons, though I don't know if you carry it over to other forums or not. Even if you do, for the reasons you stated above, it is still a good nick. If you know Dos then people know you have been around personal computers for quite a while. Machine is just too impersonal.

Of course, with your avatar, you could be Shodan....

I have been using Xian since 1984 on BBSes and as my character name in games. I had been to the 1984 World's Fair and had seen an exhibit of the Terracotta Warriors, and was also dating a Costa Rican girl named Xinia so both influenced the choice of nickname. From 1984 to 1997 I used it pretty much everywhere, then I ran into the first place where someone else had already used that nickname so I started appending the 97 to it when Xian was already taken. Since you have been using the DosFreak nickname for so long it probably feels like second nature like Xian does to me, but if you feel like it is time for a change then go for it.

As someone who once wanted to swap nicknames, I say just keep what you have. 😉 I use this name (avatar_58) all across the internet on forums and websites, and you'd be surprised how often someone will go "Hey! Its you!".
