Hi,

Been messing around with my V3 2000 and seeing how far it can reasonably go into newer titles.
GTA3 was one that looked promising and I wanted to add a page on Vogons dedicated to getting it playable and not crash all the time. This is intended as a follow up to similar threads like Re: GTA3 + 8MB vram (registry hack)?

The best results I got was with the resolution and draw distance set to low, no trails, frame limiter and sync on

Getting the game to run and making it more stable:
You’ll need a separate PC to get past the intro and save the game so we can move on to the next step. Transfer the save file to the machine with the Voodoo card and load the save.
Get to a car and immediately set the camera to overhead/birds-eye view, then exit the car and set the player camera back to 3rd person for the standard view, go back to your safehouse and save to keep the settings when you quit. This should make the camera overhead for driving and 3rd person on foot.

Hopefully if you’ve successfully managed to do that, then that’s all you need to do. Unfortunately this doesn’t stop the game from being unstable on early Voodoo cards, this was never patched as 3DFX folded around the time GTA3 came out and Rockstar didn’t address it either.

Again, this was something I did to kill time, this is not a definitive or original guide and far from the recommended way to play the game. My hope is that the existing drivers made by 3rd parties are patched to get the game running properly on non-P III systems so people don’t have to dig online for compromises like in this guide, as the V3 plays at an acceptable frame rate with a fast CPU from the early 2000s (handles pretty much like Vice City and San Andrea did on the PS2).

Until then, feel free to add any other workarounds/patches to the thread, any input is welcome.

GTA3's technical appearance isn't very friendly with regards to overdraw though, it had struggles on *high end mid-2002* hardware at the time, not really the best porting job one could have, and 3dfx's closure was almost 2 years by that point.

GTA Vice City (theroetically) would be much better for this (much was learned), at least that's playable on a Rage Fury Pro 128, not sure about the Voodoo family... Probably not San Andreas though, that's always had problems

another 'almost' voodoo3 struggle is PSO as it'll work up the point you transport out

Besides the odd 1% lows, it tends to hover above 30 fps, not great by PC standards but pretty acceptable by console standards. I wonder if any of the 3rd party drivers like AmigaMerlin's have their source code available, I bet this issue could be easily patched as it doesn't happen on lower spec P3 systems.
