The Experience

This situations kept going till recently when a member of our forums here, David, posted about DosBox saying that error52 was actually defeated and the CPU related problems he had with the games have been solved with DosBox on his Pentium 4 (and he actually did it with the DOS VERSION)! The topic is here by the way.

Even though I found it really hard to believe that the error52 had been defeated at the time that I first read the thread - I did download and install the program and run Qfg 4 Dos version as well. At my suprise not only did the game run in slower speed that it was supposed to (as if I were running it on a slower computer than it was designed to run - cause at that time I used the default CPU cycles on DosBox - 1800) but I actually HAD SOUND (running the game on Windows XP Proffessional)!! I went through the sliding path at the squid stone, outside the Dark One's caves without abjusting the game speed and detail and no errors! Then I went and obtained the glide spell for my wizard Hero and on to the swamp I took him! So I finally make it to the Chernovy area at the Mad Monk's tomb and I click on the first chernovy for the Hero to glide towards it...and the screen actually changed to the close up fighting scene without the error52 crashing the game!!! I was SO THRILLED!!! I just can't describe how happy I felt at that moment! And I was even happier when I finished off the second chernovy (the same way with the first), and got the bone ritual and made it back to the forest after leaving the swamp!

Afterwards I had sometime to relax (and my heart stopped pounting like crazy and I finally realised what had happened - ERROR 52 HAD BEEN DEFEATED!!!). I decided to test Qfg3. Basically I wanted to see if the sound was running. Again at my big supprise I found out that not only the sound worked and I didn't get the error at the beginning saying that the game was unable to initialise the soundcard but the sound was PERFECT! The sound effects and music sounded exactly like they should and not only that but they actually sounded A LOT BETTER than they would on my Pentium 1 or any other old computer that the game was designed for. The reason for that is really simple and easy to understand of course: I was running the game on a Pentium 4 with a modern soundcard and speakers that have a lot more detail than the old soundcards and speakers of the Pentium 1 time and before had. Therefore the sound was louder and at its' highest quality. It sounded really wonderful let me tell you! That and the fact that I had absolute control of the CPU speed, allowing me to set the proper speed for the game to run just as fast as it should and not faster or slower - made the best experience I could ever have with the game! Afterwards I decided and played the whole Qfg series from Qfg1 to Qfg4 with DosBox and I totally loved it!

For all the bitching and whining we hear it's good to see a post like this one. 😀
