I’d pick the Cirrus Logic with 2MB. You won’t notice the small performance difference but you might appreciate the extra VRAM more and the CL has unbeatable compatibility.

For whatever it's worth the Cirrus 542x were super common in 486 machines. Just thinking back to the second hand systems I had back in the 1990s I know I remember seeing a 5429, 5428, and 5426. So you can almost guarantee any 486 game was at least tested with one of those. Your post is the first I've ever heard of the ALG2228.

I have not tested these exact chipsets in VLB, but I have tested very similar ones in PCI. The Avance Logic ALG2301.B PCI is roughly 3-6% faster than the CL-GD5430 PCI. Some specific numbers, tested on a Pentium 75 -
Doom:
ALG2301.B = 34.6 fps
GD5430 = 32.6 fps

Quake 320x200:
ALG2301.B = 18.5 fps
GD5430 = 17.9 fps

3DBench 1.0C:
ALG2301.B = 61.1 fps
GD5430 = 57.6 fps

Anyone got working Windows 95 Drivers ? (using Windows 95C)

i have V7 VEGA Plus VL with BIOS 2.0 and did not manage do get any Driver working..
I Already tried a few from fi ftp mirror and other sources.

The ALG does very well in DOS.

Thanks for the advise and benchmarks. These benchmarks do confirm my own:
Testing with a DX2-66, 8MB ram, 265kB cache. (Yes different system, but benchmarks tend to scale well between these)

Pc bench 1.0c:
ALG: 43.3, 5428: 42.1, tgui9420: 38.8

Chris'3D VGA:
ALG: 30.7, 5428: 27.3, tgui9420: 25.5

The differences are small enough not to notice them. The very common gd542x cards just do what they're supposed to do, that's true.
I guess it would be the safer choice, and I'll put the 2228 aside for now.

They are almost identical. In my test I found my 5428 card (Genoa 8500VL) in spitting distance to ALG2228. The former is tiny bit better at 640x480 16M while later was slightly better at 1024x768 256.

My decision went in favour of the 5428 due to great compatibility, but the ALG is still used from time to time in my test setup, based on some socket 2 board and DX2-66.

I also had taken the cirrus it’s a nice Card which works with all software
The ALG has some downs in driver support and vesa modes
