Further to my topic looking for good DOS joystick options for Tie Fighter: As the initial step on that path, I've first obtained an MS Sidewinder 3D Pro joystick to test out.

It's just arrived on my doorstep and now I intend to open it up, give it a full clean up, and attend to anything else inside which may be beneficial.

My research located a couple of pages (1 and 2) alluding to no-longer-exist sites which apparently had good info about internal optimisations and fixes, specific to this stick.

With the referenced sites now gone and no other leads easily found, might anybody here still have that information on hand?? My advance thanks.

Thanks a lot, those pages have helpful info.

This page presents a method I have used to "revitalize" old Sidewinder 3D Pro joysticks. As these 'sticks age, they develop quite a bit of slop in the dead zone, making centering difficult and decreasing your small movement control. Because M$ refuses to produce or repair the 3D Pro, home-brew repairs such as this will become the only means of keeping your Sidewinder functional. <continued in link>

Our joystick had a tendency to go out every several months. ..... The outward nature of the problem varied, but in all cases it was due to one of three wires breaking off a sensor boards. The symptoms are usually the inability to move in a certain direction or a constant roll that can't be compensated. ....
The problem for us has been three fine wires that connect to what I believe is a small optical sensor board below the stick itself. To repair it is fairly simple: <continued in link>
