1. Except for Phantasmagoria, Gabriel Knight and Larry, I never liked Sierra adventure games.

2. I haven't played ANY strategy, RPG or flight simulator game in my whole life and of course I am not interested in doing it now.

3. Throughout the years, I have given for free a Voodoo3 3000 PCI, an Asus CUSL2, an Asus CUBX, an Asus CUV4X-E and some Pentium 3 socket 370 CPUs.

4. I do not miss CRT monitors at all. In fact, I must confess that I prefer TFTs.

5. I never thought Myst was such a great game. Sorry....

Myst is pretty, but I can't get engaged in it. It's so... empty.

I have an ATI Rage Mobility M1 (8 MB VRAM) inside my Packard Bell Chrom@ laptop .
This piece of shit doesn't even work with ANY 3D accelerated game.
Even some games are defeated by it in software mode. In. Software. Mode.

Thank God I bought it for DOS games.

I kinda feel like the slightly out of place younger guy in a group of much older people.

My interest in old tech is mostly from the mid to late 90's, because that's when I got into computers, and it's mostly focused on Windows 98. I do want to explore even further into the past, but I'm more interested in re-exploring Mac OS 9 and Windows XP first.

Era appropriate stuff is pretty neat, but I like to mix old parts and newer parts to some degree, and I almost always use compact flash cards instead of hard drives.

Some people are probably going to hate me, but I think Amiga's failure was well deserved.

Commodore wanted to make the system cheaper to use for a home user and made some technical decisions that really hurt it in the long run (like sticking to NTSC and PAL video modes). The OS was impressive for its time but really suffered without memory protection. Also the vast majority of Amiga games are crap. Some of them look very good for their time but they're mostly platformers or top-down shooters which means they're super boring.

Hard drives from these years can rarely be found in good condition, let alone working one, and the end result you'll get might just not justify means.
As long as your hardware works in older OS without issues, you're fine.
Hell, I assembled my current Pentium III only because I wanted to check out Aureal A3D -- its software emulation sucked, motherboard in my main computer was too new for the cards which support A3D (no PCI slot), and even if it had -- there were no Windows 10 drivers for it (but on the other hand -- there are ways to make 3dfx Glide card work in Windows 10), and also no Windows 98 drivers for my motherboard.
Assembling period-correct machines might be fun, but sometimes (frequently) you'll run into same issues as other people did 20 years ago, which is not that fun.

For me, DosBox with Virtual Sound Canvas for MIDI is more than enough for DOS games. Also I use Glide Wrapper in Windows 98 machine with great results (I have GeForce4 Ti4200).

Can you remember the frequency with which the Amiga games were released? It was really insane!

Classifieds are awash with affordable systems but I'm not tempted to buy any.

I'm not going to hate you, since I didn't grow up with the Amiga and don't have the nostalgia defense factor, but I do know that the strictly NTSC/PAL video was true only with the original chipset (ECS and AGA moved quite a ways ahead of that).
And did the lack of memory protection really matter much for the typical user at the time? I don't know that. Amiga OS had preepmtive multitasking from the get-go, while Classic Mac OS only had cooperative multitasking (and none at all until System 5), and the Mac still got by well enough.

As for the games, it's a given that 80-90% of anything is gonna be crap. And at least a lot of the Amiga's crap could double as glorified tech demos for graphics and sound. 😁

I can't imagine how one would live with ONLY music and no sound, and that one music's just the only hot jam module they could fit on the disk which may/may not fit with the game's theme. This makes having both music+sound a landmark amiga game irregardless of poor gameplay, and hinges the game's percieved quality on the composer. 😜

The CD32/CD TV crap really made no sense. Commodore was idiotic.
All the games they got were ports of A500 games !

Well, iomega zip disks were quicker and easier to use back then (I was probably 16yrs old at that time) and I didn’t knew sh** nothing about how to burn a CD. Plus I never had a CD-RW until after 2000.

But zip disks weren’t so popular between my friends so it was quite difficult to share files between my school friends...
