I have a NEW video card.
Cirrus logic 5429 with 2mb ram.

I was just looking at the GPU to put into my dx4-100 machine if I rebuild it. Would like to hear your thoughts on it. (My only other options are ISA)

Yes, for a VLB motherboard the Cirrus Logic 5428 or 5429 perform almost identical.
Just find one with 2mb.

Good catch, i just noticed that. What speed dram would works better in a VLB motherboard ?
It is Mega Hertz and Nano-seconds.

Higher speed would not be a problem.
Did you put in the RAM by yourself?
Does the card work?
Will it detect 1MB or 2MB?
When it works and detects 2 MB, we don't need to discuss any further, everything is fine.

I expect that this card needs "normal" DRAM, but the 100MHz ones could be EDO DRAM (I think such ram was used on Voodoo2 graphics cards). I am too lazy to google it.

I have a box full of NEW unused IBM subscription demo software to play with.

The /m:12 and /cd:12 options passed to sbp-set were enabling the microphone and CD input . That's where your noise was coming from .

Yeah your mixer was set up to enable, at high volume, the two inputs that pick up the most static..

Why is IFSHLP.SYS loaded twice in the config.sys?

These parameters were put in by default installation.
I also needed to FREE up convention memory and these Apps were eating up memory.

Pheeewww....The video card I purchased from eBay over 2 months ago finally arrived. The pandemic shut down shipping from europe so it took a long time to arrive. I popped it in and it works great.

Now I am all finished with this build of my ultimate 486 dream build.

Yeah, computers where very expensive back before Windows 95. That’s why I don’t understand too much why young people today complain.
They have really good computers today for not too much money.

Modern computers are indeed much faster, but the quality stinks and the software sucks....unless you're into 3D murder simulators. Modern internet sucks too.
I'd much rather relive the golden era than present day in which everything is targeted towards normaltards and everything is controlled by 3 companies.

Yes, there was allot of computer builders and hardware manufactures back in early 1990’s.
i think Microsoft and Intel ( win-tel ) destroyed the computer market with the 1st gen Pentium and Win-95 and Win NT4.0.
Cheap inexpensive easy to use computers put the UNIX companies out of business and Novell too.

I have this working with only 3 megabytes of memory.
Works great in DOS and Windows 3.11. But when I load Windows 3.11 it uses 20 megabytes of memory.

So back when the first 486 multimedia computers came out in 1993 manufactures where selling this.

486dx-33
4mb ram
VGA video card
2x CD-ROM drive
Sound blaster 16 or compatible sound card.
DOS 6.22 and Win-3.11

Which would have been fine for DOS but I dont know about Win-3.11 ?
Maybe 8 megabytes of ram would have been better for Win-3.11

It's not "using" it. Windows claims the memory so it can allocate it to programs when needed.
