Can anyone tell me (and show me some pictures) which was the correct mouse for an IBM 5150? Somewhere I read a Microsoft model, but IBM never produced one for its first PC?

"Real men don't use mice"
Is this too much voodoo?
I don't know if they ever made one, but it wasn't something offered at the time of release. Of course, IBM's take on mice involved the PS/2 port. Apparently Microsoft made the first IBM compatible mouse, with a special controller and connector:

The same Japanese company also manufactured IBM's mice when they came out in 1987.
Browsing and came across this old post.
I think the first IBM compatible mouse was Mouse Systems 3 button optical. It was released in the fall of '82, beating the Microsoft bus mouse by 7 months. Wisely, after Microsoft released its mouse, Mouse Systems updated their drivers adding MS Mouse compatibility.
It's all fun and games 'till someone loses an eyeball
