Not that this is really important or relevant in any way, but what is the loudest hard drive you own? It can use any interface too, ranging from MFM to IDE to SCSI. I believe my loudest at the moment is a Western Digital Vantage 4.5gb 68-pin SCSI HDD. If possible, post audio samples of your drives. I love the sounds of old hard drives, they are sooo satisfying.

WD hard drive, old type HH 3.5 WD IDE. Yes the voice coil using 8 heads, 4 platters, black with screws (taller than the 1" height version), Not the tandon/wd stepper which is bare metal, screwless lid. Noisy and shakes the computer violently. WD at one time made 3.5" half height hard drive. Seen one once back in the day, around 1994 or 1995 and disassembled one of crashed landed thing.

Cheers,

Toshiba MK56FB. 5 1/4 inch double height drive. 150 MB. Sounds like a jet engine with harsh clicking noises to match.

Currently in my 286 machine. It works great.

I had one that rattled so badly that I could have shaken a Martini on it. I decommissioned it before it failed - oddly it had no bad sectors, and all data was salvaged from it (although that did take 15 hours with data recovery tools on a 1TB drive). Had 4 drives fail in a 12 month period. Never had a failure in 25 years before that.

It's called full height.
I have never heard about "double height" drives - if they even did exist, they weren't supposed to be installed in typical PC cases.

And yes, FH drives are loud indeed.

I did not know that! I just meant that it occupies the space of two 5 1/4 inch bays.

I have one of those too. I completely forgot about it! It sounds like it is going bad, but it really isn't, it has worked really reliably.

Its out lasted the Apple branded 100meg SCSI hdd that was in my '89 MITEK 386DX33 system. haven't fired the ol gal up for a while. I'm in the process of cleaning/reorgonising my computer hobby area so will make some space for her to go.

The IBM 250 MB drives that were original to my NEC Versa 40EC and M/75. They're not that loud at all, as they're 2.5" IDE drives, but they're louder by a nice margin from the 80MB Seagate Momentous those computers have now and amything else I have including the 3-80GB Desktop drives in my desktops.

CM 5508. A somewhat abortive clone of a ST-412, made in Bulgaria. Got two of them, one still works (kind of...)

ST-412 which makes a horrible screeching sound. How do you lubricate these things?

This is the loudest I have heard so far, though I don't have one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCtlcmzGCTk

Edit: In this video, you can see how large it really is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1h4FP9JmVs

Sadly just an old Deskstar with a whiny spindle. Would love to get my hands on another Bigfoot TS as well as a Fireball or two, though.
