I am using WordStar 2000 under DOSBox 0.65 under Windows XP. I have run into a peculiarity and am wondering if anyone knows what is going on. I was formerly running WordStar 2000 under DOSBox 0.65 under Windows 98, and the peculiarity was not happening then.

If I start WordStar with a filename specified on the command line, and the file already exists, it will not work. I get a message "Can't open another window for editing or printing-- the current disk or directory is full. Press Escape." If I then try to open the file from within WordStar, I get the normal editing display with no contents showing and WordStar locked up. I have to restart DOSBox.

If I start WordStar with a filename specified on the command line, and the file does not already exist, it works fine.

If I start WordStar, then try to open a file from within WordStar, it works fine.

This behaviour is consistent.

It is not a case of having disk space free that appears negative when considering only the lowest 32 bits. I adjusted mine so that it was not to no result.

I am concerned about this, because it is just one little bit more how WordStar is not quite working on newer systems. WordStar is a good editor. I have tried others, and they do not do what I need. (In particular, GUI editors that I have tried are garbage for serious work. That is another story/rant.)

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

that sounds indeed odd.
especially as it didn't happen under win98
Do you have full acces to the files you want to edit ?

Sounds vaguely similar to the issue I've posted before (Topic 12883). On XP, do you see all three dates on those files when you check properties in Explorer? If not, use some tool that can force the valid date (I use FAR manager for this).

Yes, I have full access.

It was very consistent before. Now, it is no longer happening.

I am wondering if drive space has anything to do with it. I have about 65 GB free on the drive in question. How does DOSBox deal with modern (read as "much higher capacity") massive hard drives?

Sincerely,

404. (The forum software says that that topic does not exist.)

No. Why would I see a date other than last modified?

The reported free disk size is ~100mb by default, drive capacity is no
problem as long as the disk is not completely full.

That topic is not publicly avaliable, vasyl posted it just for reference.

Does it happen with all files? Like create a new text file with wordpad
or so, and try to open it.

So is it fully working now or what???

I see, that topic is in "beta testing" section. Anyway, when you check file properties in Windows Explorer you get three dates -- Created, Modified, and Accessed. Check if all dates show. If you have blank created date, that may be a sign of this problem. The bug goes quite deep in Windows API. It has already been reported to MS but there is no resolution yet.

For reference by whom? Since I could not access it, it is not reference for me.

It did with text files.

Who knows? It was very consistent. The habit of starting WordStar with the filename is hard to break, so I ended up trying it later. I noted it worked. Now, it is consistently working. I have installed some software on my system since the problem started.

If it is not connected with free disk space, I do not know what it could be. Can anybody else suggest other things to check?

Those who can access the private forum.

Right.

> Can anybody else suggest other things to check?

As vasyl said, it might be caused by non-present time/date information.
You can check that if you got some file that doesn't work and enable all
time/date related tabs in the windows explorer. Some archivers are known
to misbehave that way. That's why i asked if it happens with all files
(old ones AND newly created text/whatever files).

And now, it is inconsistent. Grrr! I am giving up on it for now. Clues are still welcome.
