I'll recommend the Intel 440BX AGPSet based boards such as ASUS P2B, AOpen AX6BC, Abit BH6, MSI MS6119, Gigabyte GA-6BXC, EPoX EP-61 BXA-M... many great boards around that era. You can go all the way from PII 233 MHz up to 1 GHz Coppermine Pentium IIIs on many of these boards. I know there are some caveats with Slot1, but if you have a SlotKet adapter, you can use Socket 370 CPUs with these motherboards as well.

Well... all of them do with multiplier unlocked CPUs. If your CPU is multiplier-locked (like most Slot1 CPUs were) you can under clock by lowering the front side bus speed from 100 to 66 MHz (assuming your CPU is specced for 100 or 133 MHz FSB). However, a more efficient way to reduce performance will be to disable L1 or L2 cache in the BIOS.

For example, if your CPU is the 350 MHz Pentium II (3.5x multiplier, 100 MHz FSB), setting the FSB to 66 MHz will result in a clock speed of 231 MHz. To further handicap the CPU you would turn off L2, L1, or both.

"Socket 1" refers to [Slot 1 aka SECC] I assume.
There are 4 different 600MHz Slot 1 cpu's and they partially correspond differently with different configurations.
-PIII 600 fsb100 Katmai
-PIII 600B fsb133 Katmai
-PIII 600E fsb100 Coppermine
-PIII 600EB fsb133 Coppermine

It is easier to answer your question when the exact type of your cpu is known.

Coppermine CPUs are not compatible with slot 1 without a slotket adapter. I don't really see the point in getting a pricier slot 1 board if you know for sure you are going to use that particular CPU. A socket 370 board with an ISA slot will work just as well.

A pentium III can be made to run at roughly 386 speeds by disabling L1 cache using setmul, but they can't approximate 486 speeds.

Yes, that is a nice and fast board. The 'PRO' version:2 is the best choice.

Yes they are, if board's BIOS and VRM supports them.
