This looks good and damn I would love to have one for my current project recording game music using AWE64 for YouTube.
But it angers me that existing AWE64s are being destroyed for making a more expensive clone even if the quality would be better (although no FM over spdif is a huge disadvantage). So its kinda pointless in my opinion, unless it costs less that original.

The CT4520 isn't that great to start out with. The SNR of the card isn't as good as this card, the AWE64 Gold, or the other AWE 64 value (CT4500) in my opinion. It has no OPL3 (only CQM) and only 512KB of memory unless you have a SIMMCONN or memory expansion card.

They're also fairly plentiful compared to the AWE32, SoundBlaster 32 and nicer AWE64 cards (CT4380, CT4390, CT4500). Since the cards aren't being destroyed, just improved, it should be a good thing?

The addition of HardMPU on the board is also a really nice improvement, if you want an all in one ISA card that handles all the soundcard and midi functions.

I hardly can find any AWEs locally (have found only 3 during last few years ). And paying over $100 on ebay is too much for me (#thirdworldproblems 😁).
So I feel kinda sad when I see old card being used as donor to make the more expensive one. Simmconn was the other thing as the new version costs 3 times cheaper than original memory upgrade).
Too bad AWE's chips were not reverse engineered like OPL3.

Still the project is quite interesting. I hope people will post comparison of original and new card features and sound quality.

OPL3 is not quite reverse engineered and I know of no currently in production clone ICs..

There are lot of of cloned OPLs (like LS262) on cheap sound cards

They were manufactured in the 80s and nobody knows who manufactured them and how.

But still there are tons of them now. Its just sad that no one have cloned AWE32 and AWE64 chips

There isn't really a shortage of EMU800 chips either. I mean, I get your sensitivity but it's not a huge deal, really.

More like mid '90s, which is conveniently the timeframe when the original FM synthesis patent expired. Some info on these 1:1 OPL3 copies can be found here:

This card is unlikely to work in Windows 7. ISA support was essentially dropped by this point, outside of LPC bus, which is derived from ISA.

Retro PC: Intel Pentium III @ 1 GHz, Intel SE440BX-2, 32 GB IDE DOM, 384 MB SDRAM, DVD-ROM, 1.44 MB floppy, Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti 4600 AGP, Creative SoundBlaster AWE64 Gold, Aureal Vortex 2
I only rely on 86box these days. My Pentium 3 PC died. 🙁

AWE64 can output only 11/22/44 kHz. You really don't want to use it even in XP environment.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

so it's basically only missing 48 kHz, as I don't think the average user has any need for 96 kHz and higher
