Snagged this, not sure about the clock, but I hear I can expect trouble? What do I do to fix it? Are there multiple options?
It’s supposed to be in a removable socket, so at least there is that.
Is there a upgraded part? Or direct replacement? I would prefer not to modify unless it will look oem

A decade or two.
There's a lot of hate on these things, as they are more expensive than coin cells and all too frequently were soldered onto the board (which was an arsehole move) but in fact they're pretty elegant - last for ages, don't leak if they fail and can be drop-in replaced. It's only idiots actually using systems well belong their technical and economic design lifetimes who have trouble with it. 😉
Other options are hacking a Dallas chip to use a coin cell

but if yours is socketed then I'd just get a standard replacement.
As dionb said its the motherboards that soldered the chip direct to the board that have given the chips a bad name.
One in my PC finally quit last year, on a PC that I've had since '95 and yeh mine's soldered 🙁

The new dallas module is still my recommendation. Costs less and full encapsulation > ability to change the battery again 25 years from mow

I was sold on the ability to use a normal battery on a oem looking solution that will basically fix it forever.
More money. But It’s the option I like the most.
