Hello vogons,
With my last build (an ASRock 775i65g with a nice dual core and Radeon HD 3850) I took a deep (maybe not as deep as I think... 😬) into what's possible with Dual Core CPUs and Windows XP. Didn't think it would bring so much fun - now I can't get enough and thinking of what's an insane high end Dual Core system for Windows XP. There are several CPUs that came to my mind. I would like to here your opinion on each of them:

Intel Extreme Edition 965
AMD Phenom II X2 570
AMD Athlon II X2 280

This is just a first approach... I am open for other ideas

If you have to limit yourself to a dual core system, you could pair a Haswell Core i3 or Pentium with a 9-series chipset . If you want an even faster rig, you could try a Haswell i5 or i7.

My Core i5-4690 (3.5GHz Base, 3.9GHz Turbo) on an Asrock H97 Fatal1ty Performance runs Windows XP with no problems. You'll need to modify the installation disk to include Intel's last set of storage drivers, though.

Edit: You'll also need to slipstream SP3 into the installation disk for compatibility with the 9-series ACPI implementation.

Why? The CPU, motherboard, RAM, and video card don't care what OS you run as long as you have drivers. XP was officially supported until 2014, so lots of modern stuff works quite well with it.

That isn't completely accurate. Intel released official XP chipset drivers supporting 8-series motherboards in 2013 (Version: 9.4.0.1017). These would work with the 9-series boards as well (they share similar designs and resources).

Listen... I thank you for your opinion. Concerning younger platforms it maybe interesting for me some day. But not now. For now it is my personal wish to stay with maximum 775 or AM3+

Those boundaries are completely arbitrary.

AM3+ extends through to bulldozer. So one of the later bulldozer based cores would probably be the fastest.

But you can get almost any AMD or Intel platform to run in XP if you slipstream AHCI drivers. Haswell or ivy bridge are the best combination of affordable and dramatically overkill.

It's all good, but you should have said that at the beginning. It's your call on what platforms and devices interest you. I was just trying to explain that you have lots of options for fast systems with official XP support.

I would go for a new board.. the 775i65g is a nice one but this project is almost finished and I intend to leave it as it is. So new game new devices...

Then one of the fastest 2-core Intel systems you could build would be a Core 2 Duo E8600 (E8700s are harder to find) paired with a motherboard supporting a 1333MHz FSB.

An E8600 would run circles around the fastest Pentium 4.

I have an E8500 running on a Gigabyte EP45-DS3L that I like quite a bit (it was my main system for almost 6 years). Not the fastest, but very stable even with the FSB overclocked to 1600MHz.

I have an E8400 in my XP machine. It runs @ 3.6 GHz at stock voltage.

Why limit to dual core when you for have quad core?

Intel QX9770 or QX9775.

AM3+ will have way higher RAM throughput due to the on-die RAM controller and CPU will be a bit faster as well... Around 1st gen i7 speeds if you go with a Bulldozer CPU.

My Geforce GTX 750 Ti works with XP. You can go up to a GTX 980 Ti with XP drivers (good luck finding one for a decent price right now 😀 ).

I used a Radeon HD 5570 with my E8500 back in the day.

As I understood, most XP games run on one core. So using the other one for background tasks will justify dual core... I don't think that XP would profit that much from 2 more cores.. but maybe I'm wrong.
