I hope no one minds if I make a topic for random free stuff that I come across and don't have the time to document properly. I used to keep a similar thread in the dosgames.com forum but it eventually restructured itself into the list of free closed source games and I stopped updating it for a long while. UPD 2023/12/28: the list has been updated in a major way, so check it out.

This thread is totally not about any temporary free giveaways, or free games available from online game stores. At this point I'm mostly interested in DOS games, be it originally freeware projects, or liberated titles that were initially sold in some form or other. Shareware stuff is also OK if it's playable and/or interesting enough (i.e. if the shareware version is playable enough to hold on its own as a game, not a limited demo).

A similar endeavour can be found here but it is not frequently updated these days.

Updated 23/11/2022: I've compiled a fairly big list, including some of my older findings that I may have mentioned elsewhere previously. These are complete games, unless stated otherwise. Some are liberated, i.e. formerly commercial or shareware.

Looks like I misunderstood something. Here's the author's current website, which offers the unregistered versions of both games (same as via the Wayback Machine link which I posted above):
http://www.dougb.com/

I think that there are no limitations to the unregistered games, but registering would entail certain benefits plus the games' source code, according to the readme at least.

these are interesting finds!

Rarer independent games, sometimes past attempts at commercial sometimes not, all represent many hours of development, testing and bugfixes for individuals and small teams

there is so much software out there, so many many hours of effort, just lying around!

anyway, an interesting thread 😀

I did not realise until recently that Anthony Hamilton not only made the Windows PowBall Deluxe freeware, but the original DOS version too: powball.exe

Here's a cute looking claymation arcade called Bert the Barbarian:
https://js.mikedx.co.uk/bert.html

I gather it was created in a game making environment called DIV Arena, which I heard about before but don't know much detail of. Apparently some of the earlier games in it were for DOS.

Found two interesting projects by one Kenneth Thornton:
Fenix Blade (RPG)
Frenetic Plus (shooter)
Wayback Machine has preserved working downloads of both. Frenetic Plus appears complete (latest version 1.10), while only a demo is available for Fenix Blade, but it has a very professional look.

So a while ago I learned about The Hamster Republic, but I did not realise until today that their O.H.R.RPG.C.E. RPG-making tool is very popular, with many different games available for play.

Atomiks is an open source remake of the classic puzzle game Atomix. The author obtained permission from the original copyright holders to use the levels and art from Atomix.

Also I don't believe I mentioned The Fertile Crescent, which is an Age of Empires like RTS with a few clever twists and nice looking faux pixel style graphics. It's WIP for now but once there is more SP content the authors intend to start selling it tough.

And here's the page of developer Scott Haag, author of DOS RPG Joyous Rebel among other things:

I just came across a freeware German game called Twinland by browsing this website. I haven't figured out how exactly it plays, but from the manual, it looks like the goal is to unite two separately controlled characters, but before that you need to find character-specific items.

UPD: The same source provided links to a neat German shareware developer with two nice looking games:
Baller! And Forget
Space Destruction

More oddities from that German site! I just downloaded a supposedly fully 3D but still DOS game/demo called Acrophy. Can't run it in DOSBox past the main menu screen though, as it either freezes or ends with "Reboot requested". Maybe figure it out later.

UPD: And here's a complete freeware RPG from the creators of Psionics: Gene Splicing.
