Definitely a good idea! Seems to be a simple, reliable and cheap solution to an otherwise tricky problem 😀

I wonder if it has any issues though, but this is certainly very creative and rather brilliant.

It's not really tricky, and can easily be done by getting an ATX to AT cable, cutting three wires(GND, -5V, -12V ), and splicing the 7905 and capacitor in.

I would add, the same can be done for a normal ATX plug, but since the -5V line tends to be missing, there will also be no cable on that pin. In this case, yes, it will be tricky. YMMV

That design is pretty nice, but you can have problems when you have very weak -12V line. Because a linear regulator wastes the entire voltage drop as heat (efficiency below 42% in that case). To achieve better efficiency -5V could be generated from positive voltage with charge pump like LM2662 or with a converter like MC34063. There is also no protection from inserting that adapter in wrong way... I also wonder what would happen if you connect this to a PSU which already has -5V.

You can just buy a single metal contact, crimp it on new cable and insert it into the blank space in the connector

Adalbert, yes you can, though you would also have to get the correct crimping tool, and for just one cable that seems a bit overkill, yet... one can never have enough tools 😁

I also had this idea but I did not like to waste a Isa Slot with 2-3 soundboards they really get rare

my idea was always to make an ISA riser with a -5V VRM on it, with that you gain ISA ports instead ^^

I already add it inside the atx psu or added it to the atx at Adapter 😆

Alternatively, a quick soldering and a pair of pliers would be more-than-ample to get a pin joined to a wire in a 100% stable and reliable manner.

It's pretty good. Only real drawback at first glance is that it does occupy an ISA slot.

Indeed yes. However it would be perfect for a 486 VLB system. Most builds only use 3 slot spaces in those machines. Like 2xVLB and one ISA. Or two ISA and one VLB. I rarely see full populated vintage x86 machines.

In case you are interested. My channel was also made as an experiment, because not only I wanted to understand how all that thing works, but also I wanted to see, if it is possible to make a well known channel by just doing content, which is not perfect, but also kind of not total crap. Without commercial, FB, Twitter etc., just content itself. At least, this simple project with Phil shows very good the result so far. We made this project together, he introduced me and my channel "proudly and loudly". I would say this video was very successful on Phils channel, and has almost 40k views so far. Continuing this social experiment, I was curious, how much attention one unknown channel can get, if pulled by a big fish, like Phil. And well, it was measurable to some extent, but just very little. Just handful of new subscriptions and a short one day bump of 25% in the number of viewers. I made own Q&A video about the voltage blaster as well and it got around 600 views so far. The relation shows how rigid youtube became meanwhile. There is absolutely no way to make a more or less known channel without making additional efforts and pushing it outside of youtube. This numbers were for me the most interesting experience in this voltage blaster project 😀

I've noticed another such example recently which had way more success....

That definitely had a serious impact going from less than 10k (can't remember exactly) to over 130k in less than a month.

I am quite sure, that in many cases a bigger channel can make a big difference, but I can't tell, what it is exactly, what makes the final push. The quality of the content, the topic itself, or may be luck?! Who knows.... anyway, I'm doing my channel just for fun, so I don't care much. However, still very interesting how all this works....
