hi, i have one of these vortex86sx based thin clients
8Obp5jj.jpg
vortex86sx 366mhz
128mb
xgi volari z9s 16mb
rdc r3060-something fast ethernet nic
no serial or ps2 for mouse
usb not detected in os (non-standard implementation maybe)
i'm trying to get it to play nice with windows 98se, for now vga works with scitech univbe driver, and now i'll try a different, free driver
the nic works perfect with a packet driver and with mtcp in dos, need to try the ndis2 driver with windows 98
as there are no chipset or specific drivers for this thing, compatibility is very bad, the "hard disk" (a compact flash mounted natively as an ide device) doesn't support dma and most hardware doesn't get detected (like usb and nic)
it would be ideal to get vga working natively with some sort of driver, i don't know if there's a way to get wdm display drivers from xp/2000 to work in 98se
for now, i need to get working the mouse, i'm using a standard usb mouse, but it only works in "legacy usb" mode under dos and get detected as a ps2 mouse by cutemouse.
using breadbox ensemble, i can't get it to work by using the "logitech ps2 mouse" driver but i suspect that this gui uses bios access to enable it.
under 98se it works in the first phase of the setup and never gets recognized again.

is there a way to get "bios mouse" support in 98se? thanks

idk what bios mouse is. Maybe you mean USB Legacy Implementation.... Windows still needs to load a Driver for the mouse for it to work. That is true even if you use a PS2 mouse.

Your problem is likely that Windows doesn't see/detect/load and install a driver for the USB controller. So it can't detect the USB mouse.

the way to proceed is getting the USB controller working in windows.

you need a usb controller driver.

I can try and help you if you told us what chipset that thing has.

In that case the way to proceed is getting the USB controller working in windows.

with "bios mouse" i mean a driver that uses the mouse thru bios, without native implementation on the os
i know that this would require a real mode driver or something like that, because when windows loads, it changes to 386 protected mode and uses their kernel mode drivers that doesn't support nor detect the hardware correctly.

But why not just tell me what chipset it has.

well, that's why it has no chipset at all, it's a SoC, everything is on the processor itself, only the ram and the gpu are in different chips.
that's why i said it's non-standard...

try and track down something called orangeware usb drivers, and see if they work.

i'll try, but they seem to be earlier than the native usb drivers for 98se, either way if the device is not detected in device manager, should i force install through the "add new hardware" assistant?

also look for something called usb view.
https://msfn.org/board/topic/69192-usb-2-sis- … &comment=585001

if you mean Maximus-Decim Native USB Drivers
They are not exactly native and they are mostly for things like flash drives, firewire and devices for plugging into USB. They do update the USB stack on 98se, but they are useless if you have no USB controller installed. They also don't work with every controller.

https://fichiers.touslesdrivers.com/29221/R1.14.04.zip seems to have drivers for xgi volari on win98

Unless I read the specs on the Votex86sx wrong it has only USB 2.0 and has 5 serial ports. Checking this: http://www.dmp.com.tw/tech/vortex86sx/
does not list any USB for Win98 driver, only a Win98 NIC driver. My guess is that it will take some major tinkering to get the USB to work under Win98 or else they would probably have something about it.
It says 5 com ports, is there no ports on the back for a serial mouse ?

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. https://archive.org/details/@horun

Have you tried a serial mouse ?

nope, because my specific version doesn't have any serial port, even in bios there are no options for serial nor parallel port

Any change of getting some real photos of the outside and inside of your version.
Also an 'lspci' listing would be nice.

I successfully used https://www.helpjet.net/Fg-87913681-84611383.html (EDIT : wrong link) as VGA drivers on a vortex DX module - Tiny Vortex86-based DOS gaming PC - weeCee

As you say BIOS USB mouse support is super buggy. It might be worth examining the board to see if there's anything that looks like a serial header. If you can find one I bet it would be possible to re-enable the serial ports in the BIOS (I could dump the serial-enabled vortexSX bios from a PC104 board).

I was able to get USB working with mass storage though, I think just using standard UHCI drivers (I'll double check)

Those drivers are for XP/Vista, the OP asked about 98SE which is a few generations earlier.

See my graphics card database at www.gpuzoo.com
Constantly being worked on. Feel free to message me with any corrections or details of cards you would like me to research and add.

I also posted a link to drivers but weldum never got back to me, and rasteri did say he successfully used those drivers. which clearly shows in the video he posted in his own thread
also, though the webpage lists Windows Vista/XP the files are actually indeed for win98.

edit: and rasteri's linked files also include a USB driver.

sorry, I've been busy with work
the drivers did install and work okay
sadly usb doesn't work, it even doesn't get detected in device manager
the board has 2 com headers, I've soldered a couple serial headers but they didn't work, it's simply that windows 98se doesn't detect half of the hardware

Sounds like whatever BIOS is on that thing is crippled - I could perhaps try dumping the BIOS from my Vortex86SX based board? Bit of a risk of bricking it though, since the bios is on-chip

yeah i think so, it seems to be extremely crippled for a thin client
my other thin client (c7 based) has a full featured bios, even with plug and play support
