so I found an old motherboard I have had stored in a wooden shed of mine since 2005 or so

actually I found quite a few but this is the one I have chosen for a 98se build Id like to do

I added memory and a graphics card and connected a speaker, some power and a display

the cpu fan spins up buit there are no beeps and the minitor reports that there is no signal

I troed with various combinations of memory and graphics cards also cards and memory modules that I know are working in other systems

what can I do?

speaker connectr pinout is...
1 spkr
2 not connected
3 ground
4 5v

the speaker is connected to 1 and 4

I guess you´ve already tried with another CPU and reseting the BIOS.
I can´t see bulging capacitors in the picture.

Replace the CMOS battery if you haven’t yet. Some motherboards refuse to boot without a good one installed.

just tried a different cpu and multiple cmos resets and still no change

however

the cpu I used still works in the board I took it from so atleast the board isnt killing components

and yes the cmos battery is a brand new one

I also tried another mainboard with a k6 cpu installed

it is an msi ms5169

it gives me continous short beeps when started

when I REMOVE one of the ram sticks then there are no beeps but there is still no signal other than the fans coming to life just like the ecs elitegroup board

GPU: Powercolor Red Devil Radeon RX 5700 XT

I really really want to save these boards especially the ecs elitegroup board

is there anything else I can do?

pic of ecs board without cooler

IMG-20210326-133335-036.jpg

page with beep codes
https://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/bios-beep-codes

doubt its validity though since the msi board stopped beeping after the faulty ram stick was removed

and the webpage in this links claims that repeating short beeps is a power error when it clearly had a mem error instead

however both still have unknown errors that prevents them from booting

I have an identical board k7s5a,
stopped booting,
had bad caps.
replaced caps, smoked cpu.
verified voltage on cpu pins ( 1V1 1V2, can't remember exactly), verified ok.
tried other cpu, smoked again.
haven't tried anything more since.

addendum: if those caps on your board are G-luxon brand, then they're bad and should be replaced. ...

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.

Also a good thing to do would be spray the memory and expansion slots with de-oxyd spray, it's only 5 euro from the hardware. I've seen many brands of motherboards that don't use gold contact pins but bronze ones to save a few pennies, and guess what... after 20 years later surely that motherboard won't post anymore, but sometimes you might get lucky and see the post screen...

Also that mobo might be at the "golden era" of bad caps... so probably some of them are already gone...

I doubt it smoked the CPU because the alternate CPU I tried still works after I put it back in the motherboard I borrowed it from

But the caps might likely need replacing as you said.

de-oxyd spray? I will try that as well as replacing the capacitors.

The spray is properly named “DeoxIT”.

That caps had to be replaced even when the board was brand new ...
