Long-time lurker, irregular poster here. I was told in no uncertain terms to start blatantly advertising my content. I hate shilling my own wares but here goes!

GET OFF MY LAWN: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCj_mkYyeGIb9MPSdb74ykA

What is it?
GET OFF MY LAWN is a PC gaming channel devoted to titles from the past. I mostly cover stuff from 1979-1999, though there are exceptions.

Why bother?
There are plenty of hardware-focused PC channels, but not as many PC-specific retro gaming channels. Those that do exist tend to do fully informed playthroughs or reviews of games, or just stick to game footage without commentary. I focus on everything else. Lists, opinion pieces, blind playthroughs, and discussions.

What makes you different from the hundreds of other retro channels?
Aside from the relentless upload schedule (4-7 videos per week, every week) and my own suspect personality on top, I do a huge variety of different shows. In Random DOS Game Show I pick a game at random and play it blind with a 20 minute time limit. In addition to scripted opinion pieces there's also unscripted off-the-cuff green screen discussions about games and mods I just fancied talking about. For every hundred DOS games I play there's a Top 25 of titles I think are really cool, and a pile of other random lists and countdowns. There's also a series where I force someone who isn't a gamer to play DOS FPS games from the early 90s, she's about to hit Doom next so that's fun.

Why are you advertising here?
I'm already subscribed to the likes of Kris and Phil who regularly post here anyway, so I figured I'd join in. I've gone a year and a half now without any type of advertisement whatsoever aside from setting up basic social media feeds. My subscriber base is entirely organic and I'm very proud of doing it the old-fashioned way. It was time to 'go wide' though, now that the growth is beginning to snowball.

So yeah, if for some reason your subscriptions weren't already overflowing with retro content and you needed even more... here you go!

Update the first:

Because I release so much cra great content I'll update this thread once a week with highlights rather than spamming every video.

The TIE Fighter Total Conversion for X-Wing Alliance is on the horizon, I'm on the dev team so I've been putting out a lot more content about that. First there was some Beta footage courtesy of my homage to Freeman's Mind in "A day in the life of a distinctly average gunboat pilot" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1xUXv9vJZk . Then there was the full-blown green screen discussion James Randomly Talks About... the Tie Fighter Total Conversion Project https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4e2ao4wlhJo .

This week was a bit of a hot streak in terms of games breaking the twenty minute time limit. With Death Rally https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUnVoSAtNHg , Centurion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNLxchuAtvE and Heretic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZcIdiSluhE all going the distance. I've never had four in a row but this came very close with some excellent entirely random selections.

In addition to all this, I also released a video about the power of representational graphics, and how pixel art and early 3D can actually be superior to more modern attempts, that's over there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ6_I7QYPzo

That's almost two hours' worth of content in one week. Trust me, I won't be doing that much again any time soon!

Update the second!

A relatively quiet week compared to the last, as predicted! There were plenty of strange titles to peruse through including enjoyable blind playthroughs of Moraff's Entrap https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--a1xbQJZAM and The Catacombs of Nemon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEduDeJrOhg .

In addition to this I also ran down the ten games that keep coming up in the channel over here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=El310gxhpl0

Will next week be better? Will I stop spamming Vogons? Find out, next time.

hi - I like your channel, nice coverage! I thought 10 stupid mistakes in doom was funny too! I also paged down the list, lots of variety there

with 'smaller' channels it can be hard work turning out content, with all the work that can involve, only to find a video you did last year only has a few dozen views - but know that people do stumble across them over the years. I've stumbled over lots of smaller channels over the years by searching for particular titles or other subjects and some are real gems.

Yours is a good addition and it is being, and will be, appreciated

hi - I like your channel, nice coverage!

Thank for the support Gerry! Yeah, like I said near the beginning of the channel, the best time to do this was in 2006 and unfortunately it's definitely not 2006 anymore! So you just have to grind your way up into people's collective view through a combination of content and time. There are so many content creators now that it's easy to get lost in the shuffle.

Update the third!

As Gerry mentioned in a previous comment, this week I went back to the Doom well and pulled out 10 Stupid Mistakes You Can Make Playing Doom https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omCD7P9fBK4

I also had the pleasure of dying repeatedly in a terrible playthrough of the fantastic Little Big Adventure https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAcu08FdUe0 and recovered my towel in the best text adventure game of all time, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfipJYpjJ9s

There was also a Skunny playthrough, but we don't talk about Skunny here.

You're kinda like my DOS gaming Shaman, wise with the knowledge of what fruits to enjoy and which poison to avoid. I might not watch everything (in fact I kinda avoid the text based ones or the EGA/CGA titles) but have definitely had a few vids that have made me load up a game or 2. And for that, cheers!

Update the fourth!

This week I was seriously unwell so it was a pretty quiet one, but still managed to stumble through the brilliant MDK https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tllM3ylFCA which is stupidly influential. I also switched to Linux by default, which has changed significantly since I last used it.

Then there was a short special by subscriber request on making platformers more palatable with DOSBox Pure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6BnDj3r1GA

I'd just like to say a big thank you to all the new subscribers I've been getting from here and the compliments in this thread! I've never been compared to a shaman before, but hopefully I'll acquire enough knowledge to pass myself off as one! I'd respond every time I see a new message but I don't want to constantly be bumping this. Forum etiquette and all that!

Update the fifth!

I had a string of three great games that broke the time limit this week! The original The Need For Speed that started the megafranchise https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmc1F9fI240 and Raven Software's Shadowcaster https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0g1fBhRZds both eased their way into permanent positions on my hard drive.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the superb top-down shoot 'em up Raptor: Call of the Shadows though! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PuMAmKqiwk A fantastic blast-fest!

Other than the playthroughs I also put out a video about YouTubers that influened me, mostly big names. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2VefnpBPv0

Last but not least, the humourous TIE Fighter content! Why TIE Fighter SUCKS! (it doesn't) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgqaXhh0qQ0

Hope everyone isn't losing their mind out there, mine certainly has been a bit frayed over the last week or two. Thanks again for all the views and comments in this thread and on the videos themselves. You can expect another spam-heavy post next week!

Update the sixth!

This week the randomness struck back! Two text adventures, a text adventure with pretty pictures, and a suspect Doom clone. Not exactly the best of fare!

Fortunately I also had three other videos in the pipeline. The first was an anniversary special marking a year of doing this with the 10 most surprising games I've run into at random. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuVOjjn8eEE

There was a new episode of Croina vs FPS where our intrepid non-gamer finally got the chance to replay Doom as a reward for all the other titles she had suffered through! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rEcNzH7ROA

And last but not least I got a chance to show my face again and attempt some Linux-based green screen by randomly talking about Rise of the Dragon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1HWLkI2HoM

Now to go and rest my poor aching mouse hand after all that editing. Hope you enjoyed my blatant channel shilling!

Update the seventh!

Again a heartfelt thanks for all the support and friendly comments I've been getting on here, and the load of new subscribers I've had since posting these silly little updates! Now, on with the blatant hocking of my wares!

The big video this week was about Why The Classics Never Went Out Of Style https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPn4cVXOXlE
which explains exactly that.

By fan request I played top-down helicopter shooter Seek & Destroy and it blasted through the time limit! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8_hk3kiQVk I also had fun with Lotus: The Ultimate Challenge, which fell just short of doing the same. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ha14SfokIF8

Rounding off a great week for randomized gaming I played through the entertaining platformer Elfland https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V6vsjc--90 and a criminally-underrated point and click adventure called The Adventures of Down Under Dan! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnkeuClZ8Xs

All in all it was a fantastic week for both playing of DOS games and nattering on about them. The following week has started off exactly the same way! Expect a similar update on that within a week, unsurprisingly.

I love your channel. I've been watching it daily since mid last year.

You're one of those early adopters who watch daily and turned up just as I was really hitting my stride. I recognise a lot of the names because there was only about 30 of you in total initially! I always find it amazing that some folk watch on a daily basis, but I keep seeing the same names and faces in replies so yeah!

Update the eighth!

Like an inexorable juggernaut of cheaply done retro videos, my tide of output has slowly been gaining more and more momentum. Behold!

This week's big video was Why Modern Gaming Isn't Fun. It looked at the predatory practices of the industry and how it has ruined so many promising modern titles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1zKZPYRkts

In random game land Demon Stalkers: The Raid on Doomfane is a classic eighties DOS clone of Gauntlet with a few tricks of its own. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oc1zQm3Jt7Q

I also finally got to play Master of Magic, which is horrifyingly addictive and one of the best turn-based strategies I've ever played. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMDSOilfaVk

Every game I played this week had something interesting to offer, and I love when that happens. Whether it was an ASCII-based Star Trek strategy game or a top-down hammer-throwing pumpkin slaying game. All in all, it was a good week.

Tune in next week for more spam... I mean, quality DOS gaming videos.

Update the Ninth!

Welcome again to another random spammy update!

Last week's big video was about the eXoDOS project, and whether it's piracy or preservation. I fall down hard on one particular side in this brief discussion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDZ2pltqBdo

I suffered terrible camera issues but managed to talk randomly about classic Amiga adventure game It Came from the Desert. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtnLhJ59vfc

Jazz Jackrabbit bounced onto my screen and was the clear standout in last week's Random DOS Game Show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcG78P88nXw He wasn't without his competition though, with the intriguing Street Ball showing promise! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3-tHgx06VU

A certain other game got a spotlight that it didn't deserve in my April Fool's video. It was buggy for a DOS game and poorly received, but I still found something to love about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOiCIy3gQi4

That's your lot! Apologies for the lateness, personal stuff. I should have another spammy message for you between this coming Sunday and next Tuesday, hopefully. Maybe!

Update the Tenth!

Like multiple cans of spam hidden away in a survival bunker, it's another GET OFF MY LAWN update providing you with gaming content that will fill you, but little else!

My scripted video this week focused on using Boxtron to force Steam into using the native Linux version of DOSBox, while also solving the issue with TIE Fighter and its lack of Steam Linux support! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=om4xQmWdKPc

Three of the four Random DOS Games really were quite enjoyable, with the entertaining Llamatron leading the charge with its bizzare take on the Robotron formula. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDEgnKtpusw Followed by a silver medal for the entertaining Winter Olympiad 88 and its winter games. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wj_zIxXIDBM

Gold for breaking the time limit, however, was taken by The Cycles, an excellent first-person eighties motorbike racer by Distinctive Software. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vrCFIMHMOg

Why yes, the videos keep coming. Why no, I don't need a vacation. Tune in next time for the exciting continuation of GET OFF MY LAWN!

It did look good! racing games were pretty bad back then in my opinion, very much failing to create the illusion of a 3D world, nor of speed nor of being on a surface - but this game does well given the period

(saying that, most racing games still don't convince, but they are much better in the last 10-15 years!)

and indeed, my 'not what i set out do do but always ends up this way' strategy for such games tends to be falling behind on every bend and catching up on every straight!

Update the eleventh!

Like a housefly that doesn't know where the open windows are, I'm back with another update!

This week I hit 600 subscribers! The big video that appeared just before this wondrous event was The Importance of Open Source Gaming, a video discussing exactly what the title suggests. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jP2f8LyXKlc

Of the random games this week, the "Mortal Kombat but with dinosaurs and giant apes" Primal Rage was a likeable fighting game that I selected the wrong controls for. My dino didn't fare well initially, but I got into it soon enough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDfGJNliwG4

I also showed my face again and chatted extensively about how fun Nebula Fighter is, a game I played last year and finally got around to blasting through again! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDfGJNliwG4

And in less exciting news, I also posted a channel update about what I'm doing, it also has a fun straw poll for you in the description. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ti3cPYW5i8Y

That's all she wrote this week. I continue relentlessly. Ever onward. Ever forward. AWAY!
