I've been a happy user of Commate S7AX motherboard with AMD K6-2+ (500 MHz) and Voodoo 3 for some time now. However I recently got my hands on the Geforce 2 GTS card, and decided to give it a go.
Now I knew how problematic ALI chipsets and Nvidia cards are, but I still wanted to check it out myself. After soaking some knowledge about the drivers and settings, putting in the card and testing it out, I was into a whole new world of pain.
Absolutely nothing worked. Tried whatever I could find on vogons, or other sites - different versions of AGP driver (1.8, 1.9, 2.13), Nvidia drivers (7.x, 8.x, 12.x), BIOS options (assigning IRQ to VGA, setting aperture size to 16 MB (the smallest one BIOS allows), disabling fast write...), AGP tool settings (normal, safe, custom with disabling SBA)... It always crashed, be it 3DMark 2000 or any D3D game, it only worked well for 5 to 10 minutes before hardlocking the PC.
Then I found out forcing PCI mode actually makes the card stable... Which was to be expected, but completely pointless otherwise. It makes V3 run circles around the G2 (837 in 3DMark, compared to Voodoo's 1365)
So yeah, if anyone has some other idea what could I try out, I think I'll just apologise to V3 and put it back.
