Hi, I've decided to build a retro rig together to play Dos games and X68000 that use the midi.

I currently have a CM32L, CM32-P,SC-7 a SC-8820 and an SC-D70.

I noticed on a X68000 site that some games used the Yamaha TG100 and have read a lot of people like the Yamaha MU series.

Is it worth picking these modules up? I have been offered an SC155, any good?

All advice appreciated, Thanks

As for "authenticity", the SC-155 will do a little better than the SC-55 sound set of the SC-8820 or SC-D70. Most of the time DOS game music composers used the SC-55 or at least with that sound module in mind. Since the SC-155 is basically the same except for aesthetics you will have games sound as it was originally intended.

I recently got one and I'm very happy with it. Basically, it's a SC-55 with sliders for easier pan/volume adjustments. You probably won't be messing with the sliders while gaming, they are more useful for music creators.

The sound the SC-155 provides is excellent. You can find some game music recordings that I made with it here and also here.

Most people agree Yamaha XG sounds really good in guitar heavy songs (think Duke3d Grabbag/theme song) or techno tracks like Decent.
Plenty of comparison videos on YouTube of Yamaha vs Roland to get an idea.

Some Yamaha soundcards also had XG Midi included which are common enough to be found for decent price

If your into MIDI (and you obviously are with the collection you already have) I'd say you want at least one XG device to round off your collection.

I've just purchased the SC-155, thanks for your advice

If you decide to replace the coin battery, be careful when you open up the SC-155. On mine, I very cautiously and slowly lifted the bottom part, just enough to reach the battery compartment and take out the leaky old one. There's a pic in this thread: Re: Just got a Roland SC-155 and I have some questions

And agree with chinny22 on Yamaha XG. For rounding off your collection, a cheap YMF7x4 card will do just fine. Here's how mine sounds if you want to compare it to the SC-155.
