Yeah you probably need some sweet hardware acceleration for this. I remember that showcase video for pentium mmx, a technology which somewhat opened up for software rendering I guess? Think it was an eye on the video moving in high resolution, that you showed off to all your friends with lesser computers.
Yah the gfx chip builtins didn't do 100% of the heavy lifting, think it was with an S3 Virge card that my buddy's DX2 needed to be run at 80 to smooth it out for VCD playback. At DX2-66 it almost managed, but would stutter every 7 or 8 seconds. I think he had an AMD, not sure, anyway, possible that an intel DX-2-66 on a good board, well tuned would just make it.

Just burn to CD the player is included in CD.

Technically, every movie can be re-encoded to MPEG-1 or such so you can watch it on a 486 just to make a point, but you'd need to do the re-encoding on a modern computer anyways - so it would take half an hour instead of a month...
When you're playing with 16GB CF cards and large hdd bioses, you can run it through your quad core and make a movie that you can watch in EGA on your 286.
