Hello, I'm new to dosbox and trying to get the game sim earth to work. I installed the game through dosbox and when I go to the install directory and try to run the .exe i get the error

FATAL ERROR: PROGRAM ABORTED
FALLOC NOMEM 0:_fmalloc(0)

I'm using dosbox 0.65 and have windows xp

Try playing with different memory configurations. Try running loadfix before invoking the game.

Intel i7 5960X
Gigabye GA-X99-Gaming 5
8 GB DDR4 (2100)
8 GB GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming (Gigabyte)

Was messing with it for most of last night. I tried the load fix and a couple times said not enough memory, then I got a decent configuration where the error did not pop up anymore. Only problem is I type in the command to execute the program now and nothing happens. no more error.. but the game does not open and i go back to the command prompt... weird..

Then you typed loadfix too often 😉
Start dosbox, type "loadfix" once, then try to start the game.

How did you install the game?

ok well I extracted the zip file into a fold. started up dosbox. mounted the folder as c. ran the setup and installed to a new folder.

closed dos box and restarted mounting again. Went to new installation folder. typed loadfix -275. then simearth. no errors. nothing happens.

Try loadfix without parameters, should allocate 64k.

Also try reinstalling, but do NOT close dosbox after that, just see
if the game works.

Well maybe the installation has not finished. DOSBox doesn't just close,
something bad must have happened.
Might be a bad copy of the game, downloaded stuff is generally not
supported on the forum.

Version from Underdogs works just fine for me. It's a Windows 3.x program, but both installation and game work under Windows XP without doing anything fancy. Just running it.

Ya, I downlaoded that one. installation tweaks on my xp when trying to install the program groups. It did however install to the proper directory and I was able to open the program but it freeze and have to close it down through task manager. tried the compatibility features with xp as well still no dice. guess my computer is allergic to simearth 😀

appreciate your help mini. I used the script as shown. had the installation files in the unzipped folder. re-installed through the script. restarted script. typed simearth to execute and got my original memory error that i posted in my first post. either im an idiot... jinxed... or perhaps both? 😀

Could you provide us with a listing of the C:\SIMEARTH directory immediately after the install (before the first run)? How does it compare with the listing I have? Are the checksums identical?

This helped me :

I decided to ditch the batch file which came with the .zip. Apparently mounting in the bat doesnt work, or atleast it causes something to go wrong. Here is what i did to get this to work :

start dosbox
mount a [x:\path here where\your simearth\install files are\located] ex. my line would look like this -> mount a c:\games\old\tmp
a:
install.exe [DONT run the setup.bat]
select drive A: [where you are installing from]
select drive C: [where you are installing to]
after this you can select screen resolutions and sound devices you like the most.
select preferred language
you can check the setup once more before programs copies the files.
press SPACE after copying is done.
once installation is complete, go to your new simearth folder and run simearth.exe.
Enjoy.

I assume reader has allready mounted hes/hers game directory to c: or similiar, so the final path might look somethign like this -> c:\simearth.

The .zip had custom made setup.bat which failed to mount virtual drive. I just manually made A: and then installed from it. Dosbox version 0.74.
