The CPU in the brown square socket is the 286, I presume you install the 8088 from your XT-class machine into the slot on the board so the system can boot. Some Mac accelerators were like that, requiring the CPU to be moved to the accelerator card.

Ah, gotcha. Makes sense now. It's an accelerator for an 8088. The way I read it was that it's an accelerator for a 286 (i.e. to accelerate your 286 into something faster). 😀

Yes, you remove 8088 from XT and install adapter with cable to 286 accelerator.

It accelerate by 286 instead 8088 since you have power it. No special software require.
And it can switch back to 8088, if compatiblity issuses is occured.

It run not stable, because i have use selfmade cable-socket adapter .
Selfmade adapter pinout is mirrored : add with pinheader and scsi cable -> correct pinout, but cable is too long.

There's a trick the iopener crowd used to unmirror a pinout with a ribbon cable, get an extra connector and crimp it alongside the first connector, tight alongside, then use the "middle" two rows to the header.

My motherboard arrived in the mail today in the retail box.

There was lots of bubble wrap on the OUTSIDE of the box. The motherboard I guess got banged around the whole way as it floated around inside.

I have use selfmade PCB with pinheader and use short IDE cable.. it translate 1:1

But i need mirrored pinout on one side. Use IDC DIL plug -> problem solved, because IDC DIP connector has mirrored pinout.

New management at my local waste collection place so they finally let me get some stuff. Yay!

I bought a slot 1 CPU with an Intel branded heatsink and cooler. I wondered why the fan wasn't spinning up so I opened it up to investigate. The entire fan assembly is destroyed by corrosion.

What's worse is that the screws that hold it to the processor housing were completely rusted and two of the four screws stripped immediately while trying to remove them.

Soak it in CRC5.56 for a day or so......

Not a good sight, might be saveable though with a new fan installed and the rust removed.

The fan is very much part of the cover assembly and the heatsink is designed only to work with it.

I managed to get the heatsink off by pouring some oil around the screws and using a high quality steel torx bit that had a bit of a taper that allowed it to bite.

The next difficulty then was disassembling the processor housing as it needed a proper cleaning after having oil dripped into it. This is not an easy thing to do as the housing is pressure-fit and not designed to come apart. Later Pentium 3s are a lot better in that they are very easy to disassemble.

I did not try to reclaim the original fan shroud as I couldn't find a way to remove the fan to get at the bearing. I did keep the power cable though as those are usually missing with these second-hand Intel coolers.

Some goods saved from scrapping in one of our offices just came to me.
DEC tape drive model TLZ07-DA, looks like never been used.

Compaq Deskpro 2000 PC, really dirty, but in working condition. 133MHZ Pentium CPU, 64MB EDO RAM, 800MB HDD, integrated Cirrus Logic CL-GD5436 with 1MB VRAM, CD drive, 3Com network card and CT2940 ISA audio.

That tape drive looks brand new. My dad had one of those deskpro 2000 systems in his office at work and when he got a new work system he was able to bring it home for me good times.

A memory stick I ordered arrived today missing a surface mount component.

good advice as i sometimes leave things untested for a long time, but this is not really found hardware or office cast offs, neighbours free gifts etc - if you put this card into a bin though someone might find it and painstakingly fix it up then post about it! 😀
