After losing my Abit BH6 Pentium 2 build to magic smoke and not being happy with the performance on the hp machine I had, I decided to bring back my Prescott 2M Pentium 4 build with XP Pro on it. I then recently found myself randomly cheking the prices of a board that i used to have in 2010 and 2011, the ASUS A7M266. While the prices were mostly as inflated and aweful as you expect on ebay, there was one listing that caught my eye. The listing I found had the motherboard, a 750Mhz Athlon, a mini orb cooler with modified wiring, and 2 sticks of 128MB DDR RAM all for $30 + shipping. The seller stated that he had tested it and that it POSTed. So I decided to grab it since the specs are very similar to what I had back in the day (except for the cooler and I used to have one stick of 256MB of ram rather than the 2 128MB sticks that came with the bundle). Few days later and it arrived.
Upon opening the box I found an I/O shield that wasn't compatible with my case, and then unwrapped the motherboard with the parts intact and installed on the board. I found the cooler had two fan connection cables and later due to asking around here and on discord, I found out that it is indeed supposed to have that, but one of the cables have been modified. I took a guess and hooked up the shorter one to the CPU_FAN header then hooked up the other to the CHA_FAN header around the bottom. I installed the motherboard in the case I previously used for the P2 system and then installed a diamond media viper V550 graphics card that I previously used as well. On initial testing, the motherboard did not power on. after fiddling with the front panel connectors, the system powered on into the BIOS. I then powered down again to install the floppy drive, cd drive, hard drive, and the ide and floppy cables. I also before hand installed a new bios battery since the one that came with the board died.
I begun the process of installing Windows 98SE. Seeing as I already had a computer with XP and the hard drive in this build being only 8.4GB, it only made sense to me to run 98SE. As of right now that's the farthest I've gotten, no drivers, no games, no anything. I think I want to wait until I have things finalized. I am thinking that maybe I should get a better graphics card, and maybe possibly finding another cooler that isn't so loud. The only AGP cards I have is the Diamond media Viper V550 I have installed and a rage 128 pro. I also have a geforce MX4000 pci graphics card that is a bit picky about how it sits in the computer. The latest game I can think of running on it is Midtown Madness 2 and I haven't actually tried that game with either of the agp cards.
As of right now I consider this incomplete and I haven't taken any pictures yet until I consider it done
EDIT: Tested the Rage 128 Pro, doesn't work at all. As for my PNY MX4000 PCI card and there was no specific model number but after searching through images, it appears to be a model that is a 64-bit card and has 64MB of DDR video memory.
