.

No modern-ness for me.

I'll tell you all a crazy story.

So last year, Mom decided to buy a new Apple iMac computer for $2000 at best buy.
Turns out every 2 months, the system kept constantly crashing and even the people at best buy couldn't figure out why the system kept crashing. Eventually she did get her money back but sadly only as a store credit.

Meanwhile I have no issues with my old computers including one I'm using right now to type this message. Its happily running linux with no issues. Sure maybe I gotta clean dust out of the fan on rare occassions, but the system runs fine.

And the beauty of old computers: The ability to run real DOS. Because I think since Windows Vista, Microsoft removed support for DOS and the only way to use DOS is through some sort of emulation.

I know what you mean man. I switch over to Linux about 15 years ago and maintenance on my sysytems went down to almost zero.

I've been reading through the Slackware 5(test release) docs and it still looks like they support 586 class cpus so I'm going to test it out just for giggles.

Of course, as always, I'm open to correction...😉

Got a 3070ti for my main PC to replace the 960 that was struggling with new games.

Paid way too much for it, but in this market I shouldnt expect any better.

Bought an external Samsung DVD burner so I can make out-of-region DVDs (2-8) region-free on my laptop and it was only $8.99 + tax at a thrift store.

It's a Noctua NF-A6x25 FLX

Now I need to decide if I'll put it on my Pentium200 or K6-2 350

My current machine is an r9 5950X with an RTX 3090. It's BORING. I miss the glory days of real enthusiast hardware. I miss 3 and 4 GPU setups.

I've been buying up a ton of GTX Titan Blacks and making monster multi-GPU systems designed around Windows 7 and NEVER TO BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET. I'm having fun building "what if the internet was just gone" machines and pumping out insane amounts of heat doing so. 😁

Upgraded my case, and added a 360mm radiator. More LEDs.

Dropped a whole lot at NewEgg yesterday:

Ryzen 9 5950X
64 GB of Memory
RoG Strix B550-F with Wifi-6

Plus I need to pickup a new cooler from Amazon, since my Hyper 212-Evo won't mount on a AM4 socket without an adapter.

I know the 5950x is a little overkill, but my upgrade cycles are 6 years -- it's replacing a i7-4790k (which replaced a i5-4460). My poor GTX 1650 will be outmatched, but I'll let the video card market (hopefully) calm down a bit before springing for a 3070 or thereabouts.

At least you will get the absolute best performance out of your GPU as possible! It's nice not being CPU bottlenecked.

I was recently playing Road96 on my i7-6700hq laptop and didn't realize how far below the minimum specs my GTX960m is. Averaged about 20fps on low settings 1080p. Everything Iv played on it so far has run great, so having this pretty below average modern game run so bad was just crazy.

Hmmm, according to my calculations, I can play that game if I can get 5 Ghz out of my Core2 Quad... I should probably blow out the R9 Furry to return it to R9 Fury status too, it might break a sweat.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

An R9 Fury with a C2Q at 5.0ghz would be an epic game tester 😁

A boxed steam controller. I always wanted to try this thing even though I probably won't like it. I'll try hooking it up to my Nvidia shield.

You are almost guaranteed to hate it, but try it nonetheless 🤣
