Hi all,

I'm having trouble trying to get Leisure Suit Larry 7: Love for Sail working smoothly under DOSBox. Getting this game working at all has just been nightmare after nightmare after nightmare and I'm just about ready to stick a fork in my eye here.

After much pain and craziness, I've got the game to install, open, and run. However, it runs like it's on a system about four processor classes too low for its specs - slow, jerky, unresponsive movements, skipping, jumping audio and speech - altogether quite a nightmare.

Here's the fine print. I'm running DOSBox v0.63, on the following system:-

1. Motherboard: ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe
2. Processor type and speed: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ CPU
3. Amount and type of RAM: 1Gb Corsair PC3200 DDR RAM
4. Video board w/ RAM amount and type: ASUS V9280 VideoSuite (NVIDIA GeForce4 TI4200-8X 128Mb)
5. Sound board: Sound Blaster Live! Digital Entertainment 5.1 (SE)
6. Operating system: Windows 2000 Corporate Pro SP4
7. Game name (and version, if applicable): Leisure Suit Larry 7 - Love for Sail! (DOS version)
8. Description of problem: Please see above.
9. Reproducibility of problem: Constantly, each and every time I run the game.
10. Sound mode used: SB16
11. Video mode: Software, at 1600x1200
12. Version of emulator: DOSBox v0.63
13. Steps already attempted to solve the problem: I've read the README. =)

Just wondering if there are some particular config settings I should tweak to get this game running smoothly, or something I'm overlooking that needs to be done? My first thought was to change CPU core from normal to full, and bump the cycles up to 5000. Neither of these made any difference. I get the sense that DOSBox is trying to emulate a PC which is too low spec for this game, which was released during that horrible interim of computing where DOS and x86s were only just being phased out and Pentiums and Windows were only just being phased in. Could somebody please tell me how to tweak it so that this game will run in a playable manner, and save me from giving into my urges to hurl my PC off a bridge into oncoming peak hour traffic?

Huge thanks in advance! =D

why not use 0.65 ? Might solve that problem of yours with the paths as well.

Vaelor - try 0.65, and then post a follow-up if you are still having problems after having raised the CPU-cycles and made sure the CPU-core is set to dynamic.

Wow, talk about your major oversights! I honestly don't know how, but for some reason I swore I was already running the latest DOSBox version... I don't know what happened to my brain there!

Anyhow, updated to DOSBox v0.65, changed CPU-core from 'full' to 'dynamic', changed CPU-cycles to 10000, and now Leisure Suit Larry 7 works perfectly!

Thanks for all your help guys - this is one gamer's nightmare I'll be rapt to finally wake up from!!

Good to hear. Then I guess I will lock this thread now that a solution is found.
