I was wrong, sorry! I do have an image of someone's drive out of a C1XS though if you'd like. Probably not much use as from my experience you really need the installers for all of the Sony stuff.

Boot off another disk and restore from there. You should be able to extract the reflect image and make a different format if needed. I would probably just pull the drive - be careful with the hinge caps and ribbon cables!

I have some Vaio recovery cds and dvds for Win95 and 98 and 2000
But they require a specific model computer.
Anyway to get around this and burn them to a cd that is not model specific ?

I do have the PCG-C1X restore CDs. The regular C1X came with a 266Mhz CPU and the C1XA came with a Pentium II 400Mhz. I wonder if the restore discs would be the same?

I think it should probably be ok - if you find it I'd really appreciate an upload! I've managed to get images of the restore discs for the C1-XE off someone but it's no good as it's for Japanese Win98 🙁 I've also managed to cobble together most of the essential drivers from various places online but I still can't get the jogwheel, capture button or batteryscope working properly (I'm using the exe's and drivers for another model with some limited success).

When I first got the C1-XA it was all working fine so I removed the hdd to do a backup and managed to corrupt it with a flaky cable. Pain.

The bad thing about sonyvaiodriver.com is that sometimes the drivers for the wanted OS are not even listed. And some drivers aren't listed at all for any OS.

I've been having to do trial and error for the driver packs I am working on. I've opened some of the drivers with 7-zip to see if they are what I am needing.

Unfortunately not, I'm after that one as well. As cyclone3d said, you can do a standard Win98 install and then use the Sony installers for the drivers. I've found you really have to install and run the 'Sony Notebook Setup' first *before* any others or their installers will complain or only half work. A lot of the Sony software does hardware checks to ensure it's only running on Sony hardware and it seems to mostly check through that program.

I think XA is for the whole Asia Pacific region (Hong Kong, Australia, NZ etc). I have one and it was originally from a shop in Hong Kong (still has their sticker on it) and I know someone who bought one new in NZ in 2000. But yeah XS (USA), XA (Asia Pacific) & XD (Europe) are all the same hardware (400MHz Pentium II, 12GB hard disk, 64MB memory). XE (Japan) & XN (USA) are both lower spec (266MHz).
The Japanese Win98 drivers are sort of compatible with non-Japanese Win98 but will either have incorrect text in them or just straight up not work.

The Japanese models are easy enough to find info on as Sony Japan still has their original webpages online (highly recommended flashback browsing – https://www.sony.jp/support/vaio/products/pcg/index.html) but most of the other regions I've just pieced together from manuals, old promo material/reviews etc. Sony's Vaio model naming conventions are enough to make you question your sanity... haha

Thanks, these should help! A program like SDIO will help me get the more standard drivers but Vaio-specific stuff would be harder without resources like this.

Hi, my name is Nelson i'm from Argentina and i like to restore old machines, so i got a vaio PCG-F450 (Pentium 3 500, 9Gb HDD, 128Mb), wich was originally sold with Windows 98 installed on it, this one came with a user installed xp, so i had no oportunity to se what the original software/drivers was (because the xp install didnt have any at all) of course i'm trying to find its original drivers, or original recovery media, or hdd backup or replacement drivers anything will help, so far i been able to clean install windows 98 but could not find much info on it.

That link seems to go to a bunch of folders with descriptions in German, none of which seem to have anything to do with Vaio computers. I'm trying to find the right BIOS update for a VGC-RB40 desktop and the closest I've found is just a ROM file for a VGC-RB42G, which might not work.

Weird, it seems that the nfs mount point on the server messed up and mounted the wrong share...
Now correct ftp.vaiolink.com got mounted again. I wonder how long it will last.

I just put my copy back up. It is still not fun to try to figure out the correct file names though.

Yeah, I have no idea which of the files in the "BIOS" directory are the one I need, or if any of them are, because none of their file names have the ID string of the BIOS in them.
