The iPAQ will power on when plugged in, even with a dead battery. Unless the battery is shorted. Usually if the battery was shorted though, it would have caught fire.

For my battery replacement, I ordered it months ago so I don't exactly recall where I ordered it. Definitely some legit battery store.. not Aliexpress/Ebay or the like. You have to search by dimensional size for li-ion batteries with solder tabs. They are called flat cell lithium ion batteries.

Cleaning the computing area, thinking of putting the Docking Station and other stuff back up (just use my M/75 and V/50 for awhile).

Waiting for an appraisal from the local games shop, trading a bunch of the collection + a some $$ for Dragon Warrior IV for the NES. That's like....the final "bucket-list" cart for my NES collection (I just nab the games I like to play). Seems to be taking them awhile, called, there's still 2 people in front of me 2 days later.

Picked up a PC Chips M918 for £20 on ebay as it was unidentified and untested. Appeared brain dead with my DX4. Noticed that the CPU was not warming up at all and that the voltage regulator transistor was not warming up either. Tried a 5v DX2 instead and it sprung to life 😀

Speaking on another forum to the OP of this thread: Running an Am5x86 at 5v? and using the advice given there I have a BD131 on order so I can push on with a DX4 build.

I used to own the 3835 and that thing was my little portable games center. The Pocket PC version of Marble Madness was excellent. I also recall MAME being ported over to Pocket PC. Some emulated games were a tad sluggish, but who cares. Back in the early 2000s it was amazing.

Added another hard drive to my XP-Vista dual boot build. A 250GB 3.5" WD blue I had laying around for a while. I'll be using it to be accessible with both OS's and store game/other software installers on it. Now I'll start moving over the installers.

Dug through my old CD collections boxes looking for motherboard driver cd's and re-found some CDR's made back in 1999, 2002 and 2003 with tons of old games on them.
Brought back some good memories specially the 3 cd and 4 cd sets.

Tested the Gigabyte GA-6VXDC7 mainboard I've got yesterday on the flea market and it's working!

Now I have a dilemma on what system to build... dual Pentium 3 @1GHz or 1,4 GHz Tualatin based on ASUS TUSL2-C...

Got this Chips & Technologies F82C452-based card going. Combo VGA/EGA? Couldn't find jumper/DIP settings online but after a bit of fiddling it started to work (with a VGA monitor).

That's a great motherboard. Personally I'd have to build both cause Tually's are great but dual cpu is just plan awesome.

It's exactly how I feel! If you are in this retro PC hobby, you need to have at least one dual CPU system and also you need to have a high end Tualatin system! But, there is always a BUT, I don't have the space for all the systems I would like to build, so I will need to pick one.
Basically I need a more or less period correct and powerful system to play NFS Porsche, and I really don't like P4 or socket A!
Until now the plan was to build a P3 Tualatin @1,4 GHz system, but when I found this brand new dual skt370 P3 board, I'm wondering if 1GHz will be enough for NFS Porsche to run on high settings...
On the video card department I think I have what I need. I can pick between GeForce2 TI, GeForce3 TI200 and a few Geforce4 TI-s; also have a Voodoo3 3500 from Powercolor and a few Radeons(9600 pro, 9800 pro). For older Glide games I could use two 12 MB voodoo2-s in SLI. Also have a few ISA sound blasters and an Audigy and Audigy2 ZS.
If I go on the dual P3 route, I will need to use Win2000 and I don't know yet if I will find all the needed drivers... So I need to do some research

I've run 2k alot on dual P3 systems and i've rarely have had issues finding drivers or playing win 9x games. I'd probably go with the dual build as that interests me alot.

Thx, already am getting a good idea on how the ES1688 goes through the system, even from the somewhat blurry top pic. I already looked at the breakout box on e-bay, sometimes you can tell what pins the output goes to based on the position of the wires....looks like the leftmost wires facing the jack and the top traces seem to match that (the right side of the "V" goes to the CD Player). The only datasheets I can find are for the 1688F, but it appears on most ESS chips in the 16xx family have the output lines going from pins 30-50, though different order depending on the chip. I might be able to rig up a speaker with one side on common ground...and the other to test-probe the output on the card with something running like DOOM, Duke Nukem - or Wolfenstein running so I can pick up the signals - and then output to an external flat speaker and use the software for volume. Also would be a cool effect when combined with the M/75's internal WSS (7th Guest, Get Lost, etc...).

Another idea I had was to see if the I/O could be run to the speaker inside the card via jumper wire using the left channel - I've been looking at making my own PCMCIA sound cards for awhile, watching YYZKEVIN'S Thread, and while looking at PCMCIA pinouts I think I may have found the output pin used by the CF-VEW11x Cards for internal speaker connection. The same line is also used for PCMCIA Modems to project the phone-line noises through the internal speaker I believe. I'll research more before doing that though.

I've found sone info about the PCMCIA audio output.
First, it appears to be pin 62 that is Audio out. But looks like it's not just about wiring the audio feed to that pin. There is also a staus register that needs to be set to enable audio output. Please see the extract below and also the whole volume 2 of PCMCIA standard attached.

4.4.14 Audio Digital Waveform (SPKR#) [I/O and Memory Interface]
This Binary Audio signal is an optional signal which may be available only when the card and thesocket have been configured for the I/O interface. It provides a single amplitude, on-off, (binary)audio wave form intended to drive the host's loudspeaker. The signal to the speaker should begenerated by taking the exclusive-OR function of the SPKR# signals from all those cards providingBinary Audio, and from the system speaker source. When no audio signal is present, or if the carddoes not support the Binary Audio function, the SPKR# signal shall be held negated.
PC Cards which supply the Binary Audio function are also required to support the Audio Enable bitin the Function Configuration and Status register. This allows the system to selectively enable ordisable the audio function. (See 4.13.2 Configuration and Status Register.)

Got Doom setup and working on the iPAQ. Needed to use ActiveSync 3.5. Kept failing install on newer versions. I busted out the Vaio Picturebook to install it from the CD. w00t

Yes, the keyboard works for the game, but it kind of sucks because it has extra lag. I believe it is because the keyboard is transmitting via serial / gpio at a low rate.

ActiveSynch is a PITA, can't find one that works across multiple CE devices. Always end up with the wrong version for the thing I wanna put software on right now. Gonna have to dedicate a PC to each CE device or something stupid. Well I'm tryna stretch between CE 2.0 on a 320LX and WM6.5ish on a late iPaq with an Axim in the middle and another earlier iPaq to sort out.

Same here - I've got one marked up "PD Disk Backup" - which is a backup of the single Panasonic PD disk I once had and stored everything on. Thing is the CD is so scratched up (you can see through it at one point where the top has scratched off!) I can't get any drive to read it beyond the volume title... I try in every PC I come across 😀

Today was a perfect day for some retrobright with a blue sky and with 34°c degrees outside. I decided to retrobright these somewhat rare Compaq beige speakers. I gave a good cleaning with warm soapy water to remove the annoying scratches and scuffs.
The speakers were very yellowed as you can see in the second photo comparing the circles that were covered by stickers.
Sun exposure was around 3 hours and I'm pretty happy the results! Tomorrow I will take care of the second speaker.

Wow! That speaker came out fantastic. That had to be one of the best retrobright outcomes I've seen.
