I can run the game in 16 meg mode too with the workaround without game crashing.

EDIT: I was initially wrong, I was running in 4 meg version. I copied all the file in the sb16 folder on the cd and i copied them in the installed primal rage folder and replacing file that were necessary. The game then runned in 16 meg with sound and music! The Installer only install the 4 meg version

Well, my "Primal Rage" version is EU 1.2a multi (en/fr/de/it/sp/pt). So - all 3 versions (4, 8, 16 Mb) are present.

Asus P4P800 SE/Pentium4 3.2E/2 Gb DDR400B,
Radeon HD3850 Agp (Sapphire), Catalyst 14.4 (XpProSp3).
Voodoo2 12 MB SLI, Win2k drivers 1.02.00 (XpProSp3).

I don't know where I can see the game version, but mine is the US (4 MB, 8MB, 16 MB) Version.

It's on the title screen. You have version 1.0, and it needs XCOPY in the path in order to install correctly. You can use XCOPY from MS-DOS or FreeDOS, and I think ykhwong's build has it built-in.

Apparently TWG stopped using XCOPY and used plain COPY in later versions.

Is there a reason Xcopy is omitted from the default DOSBox? It would seem there are a number of installs that are dependent on it.

XCopy related installer issues:
-Primal Rage
-Dreams to Reality: "Dreams to Reality" Cryo install problem
-Crystal Maze: Please Help me run a game from a cdrom!!!!

-Discworld: Discworld and XP or DOSBox
-Twilight 2000: Twilight 2000, new thread - same problem

Generally there seems to be a number of commands/handlers missing that are frequently used by install batch files. I've typically been able to investigate what is going on and manually account for things, but such seems counter to some of the goals of DOSBox.

As ripsaw says you can just use the freedos tools.

Which version of xcopy must be included?
From MS-DOS 5.0?
Several installers need MS-DOS 6.x xcopy. The switches are little different.
Etc.

You always can install MS-DOS 6.22 external commands ("ver set 6 22", then setup /q IIRC), Freedos or extract MS-DOS 5.0 external commands with expand.

Which games? Most installers only use /S to copy dirs and subdirs, sometimes /E to create empty dirs; and every version will support those switches or not deserve the name XCOPY.

BTW, the Primal Rage v1.0 installer uses *NONE* of the XCOPY switches, so it could just as easily have used COPY, and apparently TWG did just that in later versions.

If you create a XCOPY.BAT file containing "@COPY %1 %2 > NUL" and put it somewhere in the PATH, the game installs correctly. This is a special case, though; most other game installers that use XCOPY do use the /S switch.

The problem is - /Y switch is absent in MS-DOS 5.0 xcopy.
So - any installer with xcopy /y can potentially cause troubles.

I was not asking how there might be a problem -- what are the names of these games? I don't recall any, so would like to have some examples.

Most DOS games work with MS-DOS 5, and to have an install procedure requiring features only found in MS-DOS 6 external programs... that was most likely a mistake or oversight.

These games use the /Y switch when running XCOPY?

Oh sorry, dunno, just that they require xcopy. May very well work with your suggested batch file solution.

Did a quick grep of my DOS collection today. Found theses additional games that appear to use xcopy in their installs or other batch files...
-Blood & Magic: http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/blood-magic
-Duke Screw 'Em 38D
-Masters of Orion: http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/master-of-orion
-Midwinter: http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/midwinter
-Ishtar Trilogy: http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/ishar-trilogy
-Star Fire: http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/starfire
-Stardust: http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/stardust

I couldn't find any that used the /y switch though.
