Any idea what would be a good GPU for this?

but the only way you'd see the performance increase is with a full 8x AGP slot or the move to PCI-Express

That cannot be further from turth. In fact you will not see any difference in most AGP 4x cards vs 8x cards. And the difference is also neglible between 2x and 4x slots (provided that cards are the same).

The strange part is that the board says it supports 8x speed, but the slot is 4x. Is an AGP 3.0 4x slot 2Gbps?

Physical connectors can be different, there are for sure AGP universal ones that support 4x/8x only, also for example my Supermicro P3TDE6 dual 1.4 GHz Tualatin board has AGP Pro slot that accepts my 4x/8x Geforce 6800 but in reality works at only 2x speed (that is in specification too) and setting it to 4x in BIOS results in no POST. But the card and the board are 100% working and stable.

Many 3Dfx and Pentium III-S stuff.

its a KT266A board is its AGP4x, it supports 1.5 and 3.3V signaling. So AGP 8x cards will work except for the very last cards depeding on implimentation. I've heard rumors things like the X1950 Pro, HD3850, HD4xxx AGP cards only support 0.8V Signaling but they are also overkill for anything that isn't Athlon 64/Pentium D at a minimum.

What resolution are you going to be playing at?

probably 1280x1024. The aim is for possibly games like Half Life 2 on the mid to higher end of the spectrum.
