I have a Futro S400, is similar so s220 exept no need for PCI mod, audio card works out of the box
My problem, is that i read you people are using a ALS4000, and play "doom"
I have a ALS4000, i tried original drivers and the new ones found in this forum, and everything works great EXEPT doom (and doom2, heretic, etc) whatever driver i use
I tried DMA legacy, IRQ5-7, SB PRO mode, etc etc no luck
The attachment config.jpg is no longer available
Doom,2,heretic, etc works FINE if no sound FX (only music adlib or SB), but if I select FM sound, i get this crash
heretic
The attachment Heretic.jpg is no longer available
Doom
The attachment doom.jpg is no longer available
I even replaced DOS4GW with DOS32a... still hangs
Like i said everything else works good, some problems here and there but no big deal, from old to new games i foudn the ALS4000 great compatibility

Hi !
Eevrytime i ran into this problem, it was because my soundcard was using a different irq or dma from that in the BLASTER settings, that is used by Doom and some others. Good luck on that.
If needed i can give you my als4000 settings and drivers, never got a problem with these.

Hi Philippe! thanks for your repply
I just found a way to solve the problem, in the Futro bios, i set all IRQ EXEPT 5 or 7 to RESERVED, and 5 or 7 to "PCI Device" then force the sound card to use same IRQ as the one was assigned in config

Great !! Thanks, i didn't think about this irq setting. Bravo 😀

thanks, yes, i did not think about this until today
I realize even if the "virtual" IRQ in config was 5 or 7, the PCI sound card was using IRQ 10.... think... maybe better to use same physical as virtual IRQ... and worked
This sound card is really good, is not at same level a ISA SBPro/16/compatible but very close in almost every game and software I tested work very good
By the way, when i read your post... i feel already have your problem before... jaja, i found my post 2012
I need to apologize to you, because i remember solved the PCI problem, i used a 12v external power supply in my case, but never come back to vogons to write the solution to the problem!! shame on me

The next step, if i'm lucky to receive it in a few days, will be to use this kind of device which take some voltages in, our 5 volts, and output an higher voltage (12V so) :
It only cost about $3 so that's okay. This should resolve definitively the problem with Yamaha cards or others which needs really +12V. I hope so 😉 Will let you know of course.
ps : There is maybe a higher voltage source on the Futro motherboard but i didn't find it !

Hi,
did you get the soundblaster work using the stepup circuit?
I ordered the futro s220 recently, too. I wanted to turn it into a DOS gaming machine using a soundblaster live.
At that point I did not recognize that there is no 12V line.
I ordered a stepup circuit as well and I will give it a try.

I successfully managed to get the sound work in DOS 6.22 in the Futro S220. I used the Terratec ESS Solo-1. This Card also needs 12V. I found another 5V source near the PCI-Port. There is ja 2-pin-Connector. I soldered a Step-Up circuit between. Now everything works perfectly.
Later I can push some Images that u can see were to solder.

The driver from Phils Computerlab did not work for me, because it wanted
me to install the driver through a win9x instalation. But I had a E/A Ressource
conflict with the internal video adapter (SIS 315E) in Win98. I wasn't able
to solve this, so I decided to stay at plain DOS.
To get the needed 12V for the soundcard amplifier I used a
step-up voltage transformer. It can boost the voltage from the
available lower 5V to exactly 12V. I ordered the circuit at
ebay for less than 3,00 EUR.

The Terratec Card was about 10,00 EUR.
I used the standard 2-pin fan connector near the PCI port. Then I soldered the 12V output wire to the riser card.
That way I did not need to solder directly to the mainboard. Who knows if this would be useful anytime.

This is the config for autoexec.bat and config.sys as mentioned in
the drivers readme:
AUTOEXEC.BAT
1LH C:\ESSOLO.COM 2SET BLASTER=A220 D1 I5 T4
CONFIG.SYS
1DEVICEHIGH=C:\ESSOLO.SYS
Games like Commander Keen, Duke Nukem, GTA or Prince work very well. I will test some other games later.
By the way, the Gameport works, too.

Is the FM music of good quality on this soundcard ?
In the 90th my pc did not have a soundcard and nowadays I play the games the first time with a soundcard. So it is up to you to decide weather the sound is good or not. In my opinion it sounds not that well compared to the pc speaker but maybe Keen is not the best example.
I uploaded a captured video to youtube. I used my Canon EOS to record the sound directly wired. Sorry for the bad picture.

I compared your sound test on youtube (Doom) with my soundcard. It sounds quite similiar. So I guess the ESS-Solo 1 is a good one.
After boot windows says that there is a ressource conflict between the video adapter and some mainboard components.
There were no problem with driver installation but windows is not able to initialize the video adapter. At least there seems to be no conflict with the soundcard.

Hey Vapita, if you're the guy I've sold the solo-1, I'm very happy to see you build a great project with it. I never was into the business with these thin clients and it seems to be challenging (5 to 12v mod) so I highly respect your work! The Solo 1 is one of the best PCI cards for DOS gaming (if ISA cards are not possible) as it is very compatible. FM sound great, too. And it has a wavetable header, so if there's enough space in the futuro you could upgrade with a dream blaster later on for general midi support.

Thank you very much. Prez helped out alot as he figured out that the Futro doesn't have the required 12v pci support and how to fix it.
I already noticed that the ESS Solo has a wavetable connector. I found a dream blaster s2 daughterboard at

It says it is compatible with most soundcards and it seems to be tiny enough to fit into the futro. i will check if the necessary space is available.

Hi Philippe,
can you recommend a VGA capture card for capturing the video of the thin clients? I like your videos on youtube very much. Currently I am only able to record through my DSLR and that's neither very fancy nor suitable.
kind regards and happy christmas,
