Time for an update:
I love this PC, but trying to upgrade it is frustrating me to no end... 🙁
Although I am very happy with the 486 DX2/66 I have, the current setup is leaving some performance on the table because my Processor board does not have any cache.
To try and mitigate this, I have bought a processor board with cache, but unfortunately I could only find one for the 486 DX50. I have tried changing the oscilator to make it work with the 66Mhz processor, but it failed as despite booting, I got corruption on screen.
More recently, after more than a year of search, I have been able to acquire a relatively rare Pentium 60 board. I was very excited to add this to my setup, but unfortunately it seems the board/processor is/are dead 🙁
- The PC turns on, and I can hear the HDD spinning up as normal, but I have nothing on screen - no beeps either
- There is no seek activity in the floppy drive
- The Processor seems to be somewhat working, because it warms up the heatsink as time passes
- I have tried to move the memory around, have less memory modules, all memory slots filled, no memory at all - Nothing, not even a beep
I am at a loss, as visually I can't see anything wrong with the board and there does not seem to be any reason for this not to work...
Don't know if this is happening because I am missing some step in the configuration (don't have the manual, and can't find anything online about upgrading to this processor), or if it is just broken
I am leaving a few pictures of the board (just in case you guys can see something I don't), and as always, happy to hear your thoughts on this...
