According to Tiido (who knows their stuff), putting JP1 and JP2 in the 2-3 position disables the onboard amp.

Well, I moved both down one, but it hasn't helped, sadly. 🙁

This is not a preamp related issue as you can get suitable volume using the master volume but you can't suitably control the SFX volume, I would say it's a mixer bug. It's probably this issue;

Yamaha YMF71x SB Pro Mixer Bug Issue Fix

If it is a mixer bug, I can't say I'm noticing any difference with the advice in that thread. 🙁 I've put SB Vol to 1 and everything else is at 5 except CD, which is at 7. Master is at 15. CD music is still too quiet. 🙁

Even put every volume to 0 and just had SB set to 1, CD to 7, and Master at 15. Same issue. No change at all.

Stumbled on this thread last night - Yamaha YMF71x SB Pro Mixer Bug Issue Fix - and tried Joseph_Joestar's setup. Before that, I completely uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it. I'm not sure if I was using a different version of that DOS driver/utility, but I made sure to use the one installed by the Windows driver. I set up the volumes the same as Joseph and I would say the volume of the CD music has improved a bit. It's still not how I remember it being though. When I was using my test build back in... 2024...? I don't recall any issue with the volume of redbook music in DOS. Not for Tomb Raider, Quake, or LBA. So it's baffling what's actually going on here. Same with SetYMF and Unisound - there was never a problem. Now the issue happens regardless of what tool I use.

I've probably asked this before, or thought I found the answer, but whatever I try never seems to work. How exactly can you move a folder and its contents from one place to another? I've tried using the /S and /E switch, but it just says too many parameters. And if I try move *foldername* *location* it usually ends up saying [Unable to open source].

If you're using the built-in MS-DOS tools then you can xcopy /e the folder then deltree the source.

Example (note the slashes):

xcopy c:\source c:\target\ /e
deltree c:\source

Okay, thanks. I'll give that a try. I take it there is no move folder with contents then?

In DOS, move only renames folders. There are 3rd party utilities that can do it but not basic DOS.

Renames folders…? I’m not sure I understand. Though it can move files. Just not folders?

It was likely a typo, the move only works with files in DOS 6 and 7

No I actually meant folders. It's meant for moving files of course but it's also used to rename files _and_ folders.

Interestingly enough, it can't _move_ folders even though it can rename them.

I'm sure there are technical reasons why it works in such an odd way but I can only say what I've empirically found.

So... how exactly does it rename folders? Do you just type move *foldername* *newfoldername*?

You might want to take a look at my DDLINK

It can copy individual file and whole directories as well as do other things (like delete, rename or change attributes of files+directories, view files and create new directories) - all with a split screen - 2 sides = 2 locations interface.

And ... although it works just fine with 2 local drives/directories, it was actually designed to transfer and manipulate files on/to/from another system - which can be connected via a network, serial, parallel cable.

This makes the left side "local" and the right side "remote".

Ahh, yes. I remember you telling me about this before. I've yet to link my main PC to my retro PC, so I'd tackle things one stage at a time. I'll look at getting it to work just on the retro PC to begin with. Thanks. 😀

For renaming folders it's:

MOVE originalfolder newfolder

If you try to put newfolder in a different folder, then the command will fail.

These will work:

move c:\temp\old c:\temp\new
cd c:\temp
move old new

This will not work:

move c:\temp\old c:\new

Sorry, I said "too much" (a frequent problem I have) - ignore the "remote" references.

The point I was trying to make is DDLINK "works locally" (doesn't need a remote) and can do things like rename directories.

I frequently abused Fastlynx in the same uses cases ddlink satisfies. (Local directory structure tasks, pulling from a remote system)

In my increasingly rotten head, ddlink is 'modern fastlynx-like file manager. Actually free'

I never sold DDLINK, it was never a product, it was something I really needed at the time.

I've not looked at FastLynx much, I've always tended to actually write the tools I use a lot - guarantees the UI is "resonable close to something I like" 😀

Can FastLynx do Serial, Parallel and Network? Can it copy/rename/delete/change attrs/view both locally and remotely? How big is it? - my main need for DDLINK was for floppy booted ImageDisk systems (which needs to run under DOS) - so I tended to have lots of commands/tools on that boot floppy and read/wrote images to/from a RAMdrive - which means an easy way to get files on/off needed, and no "space" for any sort of traditional network or big comm tool - DDLINK is a single 18k .COM file!

(and yeah, It's called DDLINK cuz I got the idea from a coworker how used LAPLINK)
