I think the systems you're suggesting are a bit too powerful.
Sure, developers used to announce lower requirements than were really required, but it wasn't that bad. I had a lot of fun playing games with my Celeron 900 and Celeron 2.4. I still think you will, unless you want AA and insane resolutions.

Maybe, but unless you really want a machine for a particular nostalgic reason I don’t see why you should limit yourself to older hardware and the attendant lower game settings. For Win98 gaming maybe, because more modern hardware can sometimes be wonky on it, but for an XP system?

Dont get me wrong, I love Socket A stuff. In general its a solid platform if you have a good cpu and a solid motherboard. I have a stash of the boards set aside, along with a couple of Slot A boards for back up parts for my higher end Windows Me/98 builds. However, I really don't care to use the stuff for Windows XP builds anymore. I mean really, I started to go back and read pc gaming mags and in late 2003 you can see companies like iBuyPower selling high end (for the time) A64 builds for gamers using Fx-51 and A64 3200+ and Fx5900 or Radeon 9800 cards, and I realized, I wanted this but somewhat better so I know I'd be covered well up to 2006-07 time period. I have my XP build here :

Socket 939 Revised Build

The thing is awesome, and it really does truly cover the XP generation of games as it were, and it runs everything I want to run maxed or close to maxed out at great resolutions and solid fps. I could have got a 939 board that uses AGP, and kept using my Gainward FX5950, but why would I? The X1950XT trounces it while basically staying period correct for XP as it is a DX 9 generation card.

The A64 3800+ 939 really was one of the best and affordable single core cpus you could get, and now it can be had for a steal basically (14 bucks on ebay). It's well known to trounce Pentium D cpus and even surpass the early Athlon 64X2 stuff on some games too. I would be hard pressed to accept anything less for my own use now as far as XP is concerned, and plan to pick up a couple more socket 939 boards to pack away as spares in case my board dies.

My son uses a P4 3 ghz HT Dell tower with a Radeon x1300XT. His XP build is connected to his TV via s-video and he doesn't run anything at high res, and due to that pretty much everything he has thrown at it runs fine, though he hasn't run anything more demanding then KOTOR.

Why are you posting in an eight-year-old thread rather than starting a new one..?
