I'm so tempted to get a CRT but I'm not sure it would be wise, space-wise (ha!). I should probably go for a 15" monitor, however I'm getting the idea from some googling that the later 17/19" models were less deep.

Some 17" models that I looked up are "only" 42cm (16.5 in) deep. Is that about the minimum size that they got?

Sun Microsystems 20” CRT with my HP Kayak. I used a special graphics card in order to get these to work together.
Back in the 1990’s there where allot of decommissioned old UNIX computer monitors being sold for cheap.
But they would only work with a PC using a special graphics card.

Jeez that glass stand gives me anxiety. Yesterday i got this 19" philips 109b5. Edit: better photo

edit2: well that was a fun 24 hrs. it's buggered. turns on for a few seconds, the tube stops, power light remains on, stays off for about 30 seconds, turns on for again for a few seconds, repeat. FML! 3rd CRT in a year. i'll see if i can get it repaired but i think i'm done with CRTs ;(

update: I have taken it into a local TV repair guy who's been in the biz for 40+ years. i think it's in safe hands. he had so much cool stuff in his shop to repair, lots of nice old amps and a huge set of woodgrain morantz speakers which looked lovely. hopefully the parts for the repair aren't too expensive. :prayerhands:

My Sony 17" Multiscan 210GS is 15.5" deep..

Not to worry. The manufacturer rates it for 60 lbs. The monitor + speakers combined are about 43-44 lbs at most (haven't weighed the speakers actually, but they are very light, guessing that combined they are only a few pounds).

Also I think Klw2 maybe made a typo. The specifications found in the CPD 210GS's manual says 16.625" deep (which I just confirmed with a measuring tape just now). Still not very deep though. And actually only a few mm off from my CPD-100SX (15" monitor).

Ahhh, that's too bad. You're right that ~16.5" isn't deep for a CRT but when you tilt it up it probably needs a bit more space. I'm hoping to find something that's 40cm deep when setup on a flat AT case. It's already an indulgence so I'm trying to keep this excess as small as possible 😜

I'm guessing I could better to look for a 15" but they were rare even at the end of the CRT era. I'm not finding any within pickup range atm.

Interesting, thanks for double checking it. So the 210GS's might still fit but I'll have to carefully confirm the size with sellers.

Do you perhaps have a photo of your CRT, Klw2? I'm curious if it looks distinctively different from Gered's.

I just took my tape measure out again to triple-check and there's absolutely no way I can reasonably tilt the measurer or just measure it "differently" somehow to chop a full inch off of what I'm seeing. I guess there must've been some different case variations, yeah? That certainly makes it fun for anyone who's trying to get the largest monitor possible to fit within very strict size limitations, 🤣.

I have two of those + two TV's - I've been on a real CRT kick lately, just something about how old software and games look on an actual Cathode Ray Tube with the raster lines and the slight smoothing caused by the technology.

1988 NEC MultiSync II JC-1402HWA 14" TTL/CGA/EGA/VGA CRT Monitor
I rescued this one from recycling at Computer Surplus in Redmond a few years ago. Bodge Wired the Digital/Analog converter board in back where the PCB cracked, and since then it's been seeing fairly frequent use on my Tandy 1000 and 286.

1995 Micron 15FGx 15" SVGA CRT
This one came with the 1995 NEC Ready 9522 Pentium 100 that I have but don't mess around with much (my interest tends to wane in all things PC 1995 onwards outside of the professional)

As a bonus, I'll toss in my 2 TV's because sometimes the PC's make cameos on them....particularly my Tandy 1000.

got this with the Magnavox, was DOA when I got it, but I've brought it back to life with a reflow of some solder joints, it's having some weird High Voltage issues ATM though, lots of buzzing with lots of color on screen, as well as I've been using old HDD magnets to degauss it and have made about 87% difference in how bad the magnetizing was. This is my most recent foray into fixing anything CRT based, seems I've got somewhat of a knack for it.

"Our" school's computer room had these - awesome screens with a slick design.

Sony KV-13FS110, pretty much mint condition. Found it on Ebay for $125 shipped. Hooked up the Pi4 w/ Retropie using the Zune AV cables and it looks pretty good. I still need to figure out the best way to get the component video hooked up because the HDMI to Component converters I've tried don't work all that great.

My only CRT monitor, a Gateway vx700. A gift from my uncle after he heard I was looking for one. Using it on my never finished pentium II build right now( can't find the parts I want for sane prices). I plan to get a KVM so I can set up at a few systems in my limited space.
