Simple serving of files can be done over HTTPS and if you need a good file index, install a tool like h5ai on your webserver. Done.

To be clear, this is just about removing FTP support from web browsers, not the deprecation of the standard in general. FTP won't be obsolete as long people and organizations are still using it. Good point about SFTP, however. As far as I understand it, the major popular web browsers never did support SFTP, at least not without a plugin/extension/add-on. (Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.) But again, there will still be dedicated download and file transfer tools for both FTP and SFTP. Those aren't going anywhere. Unless I misunderstood your point here?

Well, WebDAV was mentioned earlier, and that seems like a good contender, especially when its running over SSL/TLS/HTTPS. Basically its an extension of (or a layer on top of) HTTP(S). Why reinvent the wheel from scratch? 🙂

Well, that's subjective, plus it differs per site. WebDAV might be a good alternative here. But like with FTP, we can't force organizations to use (or keep using) such technologies on their public servers.

What really ain't fun is the possible permanent historic loss of certain legacy and vintage tools and drivers. 😢 So I guess it's even more important that our "FTP clients go BRRR" as much as possible. The community needs to quickly back up every public site (not just FTP) containing old software, before it's gone forever.

The ftp is not really organized by model number. They had it more set up to have the files in folders based on what kind of driver they were. I love how thanks to not being able to see into the future those maximum RAM amounts listed are always wrong. My R505GL is humming along beautifully with 640MB and I bet the K15 supports 2GB of DDR.

Ok, got the ftp set up with the Sony ftp backup:

Eventually I will have a real ftp server set up and not have to swap around disks for different things.

I am pretty sure the reason they didn't sort them by device is because that would have taken up a ton of extra space since the models released around the same time use the same drivers for the most part.

I think it should probably be ok - if you find it I'd really appreciate an upload! I've managed to get images of the restore discs for the C1-XE off someone but it's no good as it's for Japanese Win98 🙁 I've also managed to cobble together most of the essential drivers from various places online but I still can't get the jogwheel, capture button or batteryscope working properly (I'm using the exe's and drivers for another model with some limited success).

When I first got the C1-XA it was all working fine so I removed the hdd to do a backup and managed to corrupt it with a flaky cable. Pain.

Bleh... that is what I get for using my router's built in FTP server.

I have the whole ftp uploaded to archive.org so you can download from there if you want:

Just click on the Show Files link on the right and you can download the zipped up files one at a time.

You are looking at around 460GB to download before you extract.

If that doesn't work for you, it will just have to wait until I have my real FTP server set up which might be a while.
