The CMI8738 chip has DDMA support for its legacy pure DOS audio compatibility.
The problems with the legacy pure DOS audio support for those (mostly cheap) PCI soundcards using CMI8738 are due to the lack of any explanations in their manuals (if they have any at all) that this pure DOS audio support depends on motherboards with chipsets supporting DDMA and how to set the mothernoard's BIOS settings for PCI IRQ legacy compatibility, so the DOS driver to work in pure DOS environment.
