Recently, I've decided to try and setup networking for Windows 3.11 in PCem (mainly just to see it successfully access the internet). However, despite my best efforts, I can't get the VM to access the internet. Attempting to ping a server (8.8.8.😎 gives me no response. I've checked that the IRQ and address settings are correct, and have tried both PCAP and SLiRP. I suspect it is due to the network adapter of my host (a USB wireless dongle, as my laptop's WiFi adapter doesn't work), but I have no way of verifying.

I'd appreciate any help with solving this!

UPDATE: Seems like ping and other command-line stuff just doesn't work under PCem (which was how I was trying to test the network connection). IE does load google.com when I enter it. Though painfully slow (seems like the specs are too low for IE5 🤣)

Glad it works! 😁

Is it really that slow, though?

For comparison, here's my try from 10 years ago, on physical hardware. NIC was an Etherlink III, I think.

Edit: Typos fixed.

Use Netscape 3 since that has no javascript. I have WFW with TCP/IP in PCEM/486 clone and had the same experience when connecting here to Vogons, painfully slow with IE5. You can't connect to any websites with HTTPS so basically you can't browse the web. You can however use other TCP software such as IRC.

I'm pretty sure FTP and telnet also work although I haven't tested.

There's the WebOne proxy server though (also on vogons), maybe that'll help with HTTPS?

Forgot about this thread since I forgot to enable notifications, but regarding the speed, that is almost certainly due to the low RAM. IE5's system requirements recommend 12M to run, which definitely explains that. I'll probably use Netscape or an older version of IE for the project that I'm working on. And maybe boost the RAM too. DOOM would not start unless I booted with basically nothing loaded into RAM.

Hi again. Just tried same thing and would like to confirm.

The network settings were same for my emulated machine, also using SLIRP,
but ipconfig in my copy of Windows for Workgroups wasn't telling me the name server (DNS Server): 10.0.2.3

My host is running Windows XP SP3, PCem v17.

So here's the quick summary:
IP Address...: 10.0.2.15
Subnet Mask...: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway...: 10.0.2.2
DNS Server (nameserver)...: 10.0.2.3
