Came across these weird pieces of crap on a second hand market.

The attachment 20240727_140248.jpg is no longer available

An IBM branded woofer with both a 230V and 12V input at the front, as well as a classier looking SoundWorks with 15V at the front.

None of these appear to work. While the Soundworks thingy won't power up at all; the IBM powers up, makes a loud "bam" and then nothing else happens.

Is there any knowledge in the forum about this hardware? Are these wasted or how do you get them to work? I assume you connect to sub/center out on the sound card.

Current main: Inspiron 8100, 512MB, GF2 Go, 1600x1200, dualboot 98/XP.

I've got that exact sub, IBM branded but in beige.

The 12V is 12V output for the speakers I have, which are different to the box you have. My speakers are traditional desktop speakers.

One has 12V in, other speaker audio out, audio in, and sub out.

Mains to the sub, power from the sub to the speakers.

audio from the PC one speaker, audio from that to other speaker and sub.

The power button on the sub only turns the sub on and off, I have another power button on the speakers for those.

On the back of my sub is a label that says the real manufacturer, IIRC a Taiwanese company that wasn't that bad a couple of decades ago.

Is this any help?

Cheers and congratulations! Perhaps these aren't bad, I'm just getting sick of all retro hardware fighting back since last month. Unstable mainboards, fried ps/2 ports, toasty PSU's...

Anyhow. 12V is output? Oh my. I used it as input, but the thing powers up regardless 😁
Says only "12V DC" on the jack.

I don't understand the hooking up part though. There is only one audio jack, so you can't connect through it in case I haven't missed something...

Current main: Inspiron 8100, 512MB, GF2 Go, 1600x1200, dualboot 98/XP.

Sorry, I know I am probably explaining it badly, too.

I've attached some pictures, though the label on the back of the right speaker has fallen off. Top to bottom the sockets are:

Audio In from PC, 3.5mm, stereo
Sub out, 3.5mm, stereo
Left speaker, RCA, mono
12V power in, barrel jack

There is an unusual cable, male-to-male barrel jacks, to take the 12V out from the sub and take it to the speakers. Otherwise the system has two male-male 3.5mm audio cables.

The good news is you can use the sub stand alone. Just give it mains, and audio in, and it will boom the low-end. For many years my sub was connected to an old Aiwa stereo that had left and right sub RCA sockets, and with a 2x RCA to 3.5mm cable the sub worked off that Aiwa.

Hope this is now slightly clearer than mud 😀

Wow thank you so much! Finally got the IBM woofer sort of working. Sound card issues. Got it going on the main PC now, at least inside the Realtek configuration program, with the two Infinity speakers acting as virtual 5.0. Doesn't work anywhere else.

Thanks again though 😁

Good to know you're making progress. The sub is never going to blast the house down, but if it is in decent condition still it can help add a nice heft to right music.

Burial, for example, it's all crackle, sub-bass, and shivers down your spine. Awesome 😀
