Nothing I tried gets Windows 98SE to see my Genius serial mouse.
It doesn't get detected right at the beginning of the Windows installer.
Later, upon first start, it says there's no mouse detected and I can plug in a serial mouse now (which I did and nothing happened).
I added many different mice through "Add hardware" (all end up with a yellow exclamation mark).
I run the Genius mouse DOS installer in Windows, and it has a little test function, which actually works in that DOS window! But as soon as I close that window, the mouse doesn't work (not with a restart either).
I only have one serial mouse to try. I have a serial to PS/2 adapter, which I tried with a couple of PS/2 mice, but no joy with those either.
The PC (Pentium 166, ASUS mobo) doesn't have PS/2 or USB ports, so I'm really stuck.
What can I do?

Ah man, there actually IS a switch, though it's for changing between 2/3 buttons.
It was on 3 buttons, I changed it to 2, and now it's working.
It didn't occur to me that this could have anything to do with it.
I won't ask how to get it to work with three buttons. 😉

Im happy is working now

Windows 98 have driver for mouse system mode, just add the driver by hand, reset computer and test if detect your mouse again. If you dont install the mouse driver by hand, windows 98 install the microsoft protocol mouse by defualt in serial mode
